Star Trek brings back fantastic gimmick for new Star Trek: Lower Decks book

As a gamer who’s been around the block a few times, let me tell you, this new Star Trek: Lower Decks – Warp Your Own Way comic is a breath of fresh air! I remember those old “choose your own adventure” books from my childhood, and this modern take on them is a delightful throwback. The art by Chris Fenoglio perfectly captures the style of the show, and the humor and tone are spot-on.

Instead of focusing solely on the TV shows and movies within the Star Trek franchise, we often discuss related topics as well. However, there’s still so much to explore! Today, we aim to delve a bit deeper. We’ve previously discussed toys, video games, and other aspects, but today we want to shine a light on a comic that seems to have slipped under the public’s notice.

Over the past few years, there have been numerous comics produced, primarily by IDW, but none quite like this one. In this fresh release, you find yourself once again embarking on an exciting journey with the crew of the USS Cerritos, except the conclusion is left to your decision-making skills. This book harks back to the classic “choose your own adventure” novels from the 70s and 80s, where the reader decides the outcome of the story.

In these books, popular again in the 1990s, you select the storyline you wish to pursue, hoping for a fulfilling conclusion. However, at times, things don’t go as planned, and you might find yourself becoming dinner for a monster instead.

On this occasion, instead of a typical novel, you’re now leafing through vividly illustrated pages set against Star Trek: Lower Decks as your backdrop. This comic book, published by IDW and penned by Ryan North – the same writer for the Lower Decks comics – retains the same zest and fast-paced rhythm as the show. Remarkably, the comic author has been able to replicate this dynamic energy even in print form.

The comic provides a fresh, contemporary reinterpretation of the timeless storyline that longtime enthusiasts will recognize. Although this style of narrative within a comic is relatively new, Star Trek has previously ventured into such territory, publishing a Choose Your Own Adventure book in 1984 authored by Michael J. Dodge. Unfortunately, this book, which was written nearly four decades ago, has become less well-known over time, with fewer and fewer fans recalling it.

Presently, we have an opportunity to revive a concept presumed obsolete for several decades, this time in vivid comic book format filled with illustrations. The artwork for this fresh comic book, titled “ Star Trek: Lower Decks – Create Your Own Path“, is masterfully done by Chris Fenoglio and mirrors the show’s style perfectly.

Ideally, this small treasure will resonate with the audience and spur the creation of additional similar pieces. They’re distinctive, entertaining, and offer readers an unusual experience compared to settling down for another installment of their preferred series. Who knows, perhaps Lower Decks might discover a new lease on life in comic books with these Choose Your Own Adventure books becoming a recurring feature.

Essentially, this series is a comedy and the animation style makes it adaptable across various platforms. Therefore, you can expect some distinctively colorful and dynamic comic book versions (differing from other IDW publications). Moreover, the humor and tone will attract fans of all ages and walks of life, ensuring they find joy in the narratives presented.

If you’re keen on getting this book, you can find it at various comic book stores nationwide, in several physical bookstores, or digitally through multiple online retailers.
