Gwen Stefani divides fans by selling new album Bouquet on the Home Shopping Network
As a long-time fan of both Gwen Stefani and Coldplay, I must say I was taken aback when I saw them performing on home shopping channels like HSN and QVC respectively. Now, don’t get me wrong; I love their music, but seeing these iconic artists peddling their latest albums feels a bit surreal.
Fans are finding themselves at odds as Gwen Stefani chooses to sell her latest album through the Home Shopping Network, a move reminiscent of Coldplay’s controversial decision to do the same on QVC mere weeks prior.
On Tuesday, Gwen Stefani, the 55-year-old lead vocalist of No Doubt, who was spotted supporting her son at a recent football match, made an appearance live on the Home Shopping Network.
She was there to sell her fifth solo studio album – titled Bouquet – as she sat down for half an hour with presenter Nicole Hickl.
Apart from discussing the album, there were also snippets of previously recorded performances of some new songs from the album included in what the music artist spoke about.
Due to the unusual method she used to market her album, which is quite unexpected given the rise of streaming services, her fans responded with a range of opinions.
As a dedicated follower of Gwen on social media, I recently came across a screenshot shared by one of her fans on the platform, previously known as Twitter. The caption accompanying this image was quite critical of Gwen’s recent appearance on HSN.
The user wrote: ‘I never want to hear another fandom complain about their favs career again.
‘Gwen Stefani is out her shilling her album on HSN. I have been in the TRENCHES for this woman.’
A few responses to the divisive post suggested that Gwen’s 48-year-old country musician partner, Blake Shelton, might have influenced the decision she made.
One wrote: ‘Nothing she can do is wrong. (I blame Blake). Otherwise she’s still an icon.
‘And honestly, Somebody Else’s is a SMASH!!!! Actually her best song of this entire “era”.’
Someone stated: ‘Nobody endured more hardships than we who have been protecting the music that emerged at the time when she crossed paths with Blake Shelton.’
Others believed that selling the album on HSN was a good move.
One X user wrote: ‘It’s actually a smart strategy. All Those old ladies who watch her on The Voice are going to eat this up.’
Last month, Coldplay was roasted on social media as they made a similar move for promoting their 10th album, Moon Music, on the home shopping channel, QVC.
The part of the sales team, consisting of the entire quartet playing different songs from their latest album, stirred up excitement among X users when they couldn’t help but show astonishment upon witnessing the British rock group appear on the broadcast.
‘Now why the f**k is Coldplay performing live on QVC?!’ one stunned viewer tweeted.
Another wrote: ‘Holy s**t that QVC broadcast with Coldplay shows everything that is wrong with capitalist consumerism. The music is good though.’
A third called the segment ‘unhinged.’
Some supporters of the band found themselves doubting the authenticity of their creative work, or as if their critical faculties had momentarily faltered.
Yesterday, my spouse and I watched Coldplay perform live on QVC, and we’re still in awe. It left us wondering about the current state of artistic authenticity. This was a question posed by one user on X platform.
On platform X, some users noticed and commented on the striking similarities between the choreographed movements by Gwen and Coldplay. Unfortunately, their fans have not always responded positively to these comparisons.
A social media user said: ‘Coldplay was just selling their latest album on QVC!!!! [laughing while crying emoji] Music Fandoms are up in arms [sigh emoji]’
Others believed that it was a smart strategy on the part of both of the music acts.
A poster for X stated: ‘Coldplay first appeared on QVC, now Gwen on HSN. If you’re following closely, this seems like a smart move.’
Bouquet is Gwen’s first release since You Make It Feel Like Christmas in 2017.
Gwen has so far unveiled three songs from the album – ‘Somebody Else’, ‘Swallow My Tears’, and ‘Purple Irises’, a collaboration with her spouse Blake.
