Taylor Swift sued over trademark infringement for The Life of a Showgirl

It’s common for famous people to face lawsuits, and Taylor Swift recently experienced this with her upcoming 2025 album, The Life of a Showgirl. A Las Vegas showgirl is claiming Swift used a trademarked name for the album without permission.

Maren (Wade) Flagg claims in a lawsuit filed in California federal court that she owns the trademark to “Confessions of a Showgirl,” originally a column and later adapted into a live cabaret performance.

Wade alleges that Taylor Swift’s extensive album promotion overshadowed her own brand and nearly forced her out of business. While Swift is entitled to creative freedom, the lawsuit argues that this doesn’t justify using a brand name so similar to Wade’s, creating confusion among customers.

Wade’s writings contain phrases like “life of a showgirl.” The lawsuit also argues that Taylor Swift’s newest album title was made for profit, not artistic expression.

If Wade wins the lawsuit, Swift would be legally required to stop using the title “The Life of a Showgirl.”

Even if Wade owns the trademark for “Confessions of a Showgirl,” it seems distinct enough from Taylor Swift’s album title, and the phrase itself is common enough, that the outcome of the lawsuit is really anyone’s guess.

Will Taylor Swift choose to settle the case privately? It might be the simplest option, but it could also be unfair to both artists involved. Alternatively, could the lawsuit be dropped altogether? At this point, anything could happen, and it’s unclear when this issue will be resolved.
