I’ve seen many promising ventures come and go, leaving gamers like myself hanging. However, if there’s one thing I’ve learned in this rollercoaster ride called gaming, it’s that patience often pays off.
The much-anticipated Xbox Mobile Gaming App Store from Microsoft is experiencing further postponement, as confirmed by Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming. It seems the team is now concentrating on conducting extra market studies to develop an offering that stands out and appeals in the highly competitive mobile gaming arena.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Spencer expressed that merely launching a web-based store wouldn’t suffice because it requires a distinct value proposition to lure users away from the established giants like Apple and Google app stores. He further explained, “Having a web store means people don’t have to visit an app store to install something, but you still need a method for finding the store.
In October 2022, Microsoft revealed its plans for an Xbox Games App Store on mobile devices, aiming to take on the strongholds of Google and Apple. Additionally, it was disclosed that Microsoft is engaging in discussions with other partners to create a unique mobile marketplace. The store was initially slated to debut in July 2024, but since then there have been no further announcements, except for the appearance of the store’s web page on the insiders program.
Phil Spencer indicated that Microsoft remains open to pursuing additional acquisitions, despite the massive $68.7 billion Activision Blizzard deal already on the table. For now, no major transactions are imminent; however, Spencer emphasized a keen interest in expanding Microsoft’s footprint in Asia, particularly by collaborating with creative teams based in China. Acquisitions that enhance “geographic diversity” could potentially hold value.
In essence, although there’s no fixed release date yet, Spencer maintains a positive outlook towards the mobile gaming industry. He expressed that things are progressing favorably, hinting at a time when open systems might provide users and creators with greater options to choose from.
