As an ardent admirer of extraordinary lives and their intriguing journeys, I find myself captivated by the tale of David Lycett Green, a man whose existence was as vibrant and unconventional as his style. Born into a lineage that includes the legendary Amy Winehouse’s mother and the Princess of Yugoslavia, one might expect a life filled with grandeur and formality. However, David’s story is a testament to the fact that bloodlines don’t always dictate destiny; it’s the choices we make that shape our lives.

His grandfather, Sir John Betjeman, achieved an unmatched connection with the public among Poet Laureates since Lord Tennyson. Meanwhile, his mother, Candida, captivated a generation of men during her youth and became a friend of King Charles before passing away from cancer at the age of 71 in 2014.

However, David Lycett Green, Candida’s eldest child, left an indelible impression on everyone he met, including Queen’s son Tom Parker Bowles and her nephew Sir Ben Elliot. They are currently grappling with his untimely demise at the young age of 49.

While Candida collaborated on a book about the royal garden at Highgrove with the King, Dave – also known as Lycett Green – chose a less traditional route. According to his younger brother John in an online tribute, he was described as ‘a friend of the homeless, a proud vagabond, kind, generous, brave, courageous, humble, and honest.’

Dave, similarly to his father, Rupert Lycett Green, attended Eton. However, unlike Rupert who revolutionized men’s fashion through his 1960s shop Blades, Dave preferred an unconventional style often seen in a white glove paired with a shell suit, fresh Nike shoes. Occasionally, he would accentuate this look with a top hat and a cane.

A book, In Search Of The English Eccentric by Henry Hemming, recorded his fixation with magic and freemasonry – and his playful self-description as ‘the Lord of Kensington’.

The review noted that he enjoys waking up at six, donning white gloves, and performing dances in public areas near subway stations as city commuters head to work.

‘Or he makes pretend drug deals on a toy mobile phone painted gold. His aim is to entertain bankers and so have a positive effect on the world economy.’

Sir Ben Elliot characterizes him as a deeply insightful individual, expressing: ‘Extremely fortunate to call him my friend.’, whereas Tom Parker Bowles remarks: ‘What an exceptional person he was. Unquestionably unique. May his spirit continue to shine brightly.’

The Duke of Wellington’s absence

The magnificent Apsley House, often referred to as Number 1 London and the residence of the Duke of Wellington, provided an enticing backdrop for a gathering to mark the debut of London Lost Interiors, a newly released book penned by Steven Brindle.

However, even though the author detailed his 12-year journey to finish the book, there was a notable absence – the individual who wrote the foreword, none other than the Duke himself.

This was no case of casual desertion. Far from it: the Duke, 79, was waiting to speak in the House of Lords debate on the fate of hereditary peers – now being axed with a fervour arguably unmatched since Waterloo.

Bono’s girl rocks out on red carpet

In a new twist, actress Eve Hewson reveals that her fashion stylist, Karla Welch, tends to style her with a flair that leans towards pop music persona rather than conventional actress attire. At the debut of the second season of Bad Sisters, she appeared as if she could break into song at any moment.

As an utterly smitten admirer, I can’t help but gush over the Irish beauty who graced our screens as Becka, the youngest sibling, in that captivating dark comedy on AppleTV+, at just 33 years old! When she walked the red carpet in New York, she was nothing short of a vision. She donned a semi-sheer top adorned with intricate cut-out details and a ethereal tulle skirt designed by none other than Simone Rocha. Simply stunning!

Eve, the daughter of U2 band member Bono and his wife Ali Hewson, expresses her affection for fashion while emphasizing her preference for maintaining her individuality by saying, “I appreciate fashion, but I strive to express my authentic self.

Amy Winehouse’s mother and the Princess of Yugoslavia

An unexpected pairing, Amy Winehouse’s mom, Janis, and Princess Katarina of Yugoslavia found common ground at a West End event for Healing The Wounded Child. Their bond formed quickly, as they shared experiences of tumultuous relationships with past spouses.

64-year-old I, the Princess, found an instant connection with 70-year-old retired pharmacist Janis when we exchanged tales about our respective partners’ peculiarities. You see, her spouse, Mitch Winehouse, a former taxi driver, shares some striking similarities with my late husband, the esteemed barrister Sir Desmond de Silva.

‘He was a great man, but we had rows. However successful, we all know married life isn’t always easy. Janis said she knew what I meant and we had a good laugh about it.’

Dancing on Strictly Come Dancing provided a means for Annabel Croft to deal with her sadness following the passing of her husband, Mel Coleman, at the age of 60, last year.

Currently, Annabel finds herself adopting a more stylish and glamorous sense of fashion due to the influence of her daughters Amber (aged 28) and Lily (aged 25). This aligns well with the aesthetic presented on the BBC program as well.

The tennis star-turned-TV presenter mentions that it was his two daughters who encouraged him to explore new directions in terms of fashion and boost his confidence.

58-year-old Annabel remarks, “They guided me to stop worrying too much about my clothing choices since I was stepping outside my comfort zone. Now, I’m absolutely fascinated by fashion. I hope they view me as stylish and glamorous, their mom.

Billy Night’s brain fog on stage

On one occasion, actor Bill Nighy voiced his disapproval towards younger peers who considered it trendy to forego memorizing their lines, and he has also expressed frustration with instances of memory lapses during performances.

As I recount this experience, I can’t help but feel a shiver run down my spine. You see, it was an unprecedented event – something that had never occurred in over a millennium of my theatrical journey. Pridefully, I’ve always taken pride in my memory, ensuring not to miss a single line on stage for 1,000 years. However, this time, history took a surprising turn.

The lack of preparation due to overconfidence led to a difficult situation with no prior examples to guide me. This worry lingered for quite a while afterwards.
