Shrinking season 2 episode 6 successfully tackles the theme of loneliness (Review)
As a long-time fan of heartfelt and relatable TV shows, I must say that last week’s episode of Shrinking season 2 truly resonated with me. The raw emotion portrayed by each character, particularly Sean and Alice, was palpable and left me feeling a mix of empathy, sadness, and hope.
In the latest episode of ‘Shrinking’ season 2, everyone’s sincerity and authenticity shone through. This time, several characters delve into the topic of solitude. However, there are also reconciliations and camaraderie – for the majority, at least. Join us as we explore this episode in our review of ‘Shrinking’ season 2, episode 6 titled “In a Lonely Place,” now streaming on Apple TV+. SPOILER ALERT.
Let’s begin our discussion with Sean, as his actions in episode 5 left us all on edge. What an ending! His father failed to empathize with Sean’s distress once more, leading him to respond aggressively and instigate a confrontation. Interestingly, it wasn’t Sean who retaliated; instead, he endured the beating, which was quite heart-wrenching to witness.
What touched everyone was how the entire group made an effort to visit and support Sean in the hospital. It’s heartwarming to know that even though his father isn’t supporting him now, many others are stepping up. Additionally, it’s always amusing when a character on TV is under the influence of hospital medication, and Sean was no exception. Luke Tennie played this part quite humorously.
I’m thoroughly enjoying the collaboration between Jimmy and Paul on Sean’s case in Shrinking season 2, and this episode beautifully portrayed their bond with a touch of humor. It was delightful to witness. Thankfully, after a lengthy conversation, they managed to help Sean’s father recognize his mistakes in handling his son’s pain. Indeed, the support from his dad is exactly what Sean needs, and he finally receives it. Hooray!
Following Alice comes into play, as she featured prominently in this episode. Brian reveals to her that he’s been visiting and conversing with Louis, the man responsible for Tia’s accident who also happens to be an alcoholic. Brian couldn’t maintain the secret for much longer. Intrigued, Alice expresses a desire to speak with him, leading to their encounter with Louis. As the title foreshadows, Louis is in a state of solitude and wrestles with his guilt, which is evident in his current living situation.
In time, Alice recalls a touching tale of her mother’s compassion which triggers an insight for her – she decides to forgive Louis as she believes her mom would have done the same. It’s clear how Alice arrived at this conclusion. However, given all the rage and pain, it seemed premature for Alice to readily pardon him. Perhaps there will be more developments in their relationship. Yet, without a doubt, actress Lukita Maxwell delivers an exceptional performance as Alice, imbuing her with a captivating vulnerability that’s truly compelling.
In terms of solitude, there’s an unexpected story development for Liz that took me off guard. With the sale of her share in the food truck business to Sean’s father, she seems to have lost direction. To make matters worse, her son departed for school without a proper farewell. I understand how that must feel as a mother. However, Liz, your reaction to Conner could have been more understanding and positive. Granted, his constant complaining was becoming tiresome, but…
I adore Derek like no other, he’s my ideal husband, but there’s something he doesn’t quite grasp – the emptiness and yearning I’m feeling at this moment. It’s astonishing how I find myself reaching out to my past, my ex-boyfriend Mac (portrayed by the talented Josh Hopkins, who starred alongside me in Cougar Town!). Of course, our interactions are purely platonic – we’re just spending time together. Interestingly enough, he’s even asked me to photograph his dog, an unexpected interest that has sparked a renewed passion within me. I can’t help but wonder where this tale is headed though. Curious indeed.
