I was honestly shocked when I heard Chris O’Donnell talk so openly about Batman & Robin! It’s a movie from 1997 that… well, let’s just say it wasn’t a critical success, and it was wild to hear him address just how bad it was with such honesty. It really made me do a double-take!
Chris O’Donnell, the 55-year-old actor known for playing Robin in the Batman films Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, recently shared some surprising stories about his time on set. He revealed these details during an interview on the podcast I’ve Never Said That Before with Tommy DiDario.
Even with big stars like George Clooney, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Uma Thurman, the movie Batman & Robin was a huge financial failure and is widely considered one of the worst superhero films ever made.
During a recent interview, Rosie O’Donnell shared that director Joel Schumacher was deeply upset by the harsh reviews of a film, to the point where he became a recluse in his hotel room. She also revealed that he and Arnold Schwarzenegger never filmed a scene together.
Although people were interested in the stories shared behind the scenes, it was Rosie O’Donnell’s look that really got everyone talking on social media.
One follower commented that Chris looked very different, while another expressed shock, simply writing, ‘Wow, is that Chris?’
One fan playfully commented that Chris O’Donnell was almost unrecognizable, joking that he now looks like a typical real estate agent.
Not everyone was complimentary, and one particularly harsh comment read, ‘Wow, it’s been ages since I’ve seen Chris O’Donnell! He looks really aged.’
While some dedicated fans defended him, pointing out he hadn’t changed much, most people were surprised by the actor’s new look.
Even though the interview caused a big stir, people were captivated by what he said, especially when he started sharing interesting behind-the-scenes stories about the making of the movie Batman & Robin.
O’Donnell said he wasn’t bothered by the harsh reviews, but the film’s director, Joel Schumacher, who passed away in 2020 at age 80, reportedly was.
According to O’Donnell, Joel was deeply upset. They were in Buenos Aires promoting the film when he refused to leave his hotel room. The initial reviews were negative, and it was incredibly difficult for him to continue with publicity knowing that.
Rosie O’Donnell, 78, revealed she never shared a scene with Arnold Schwarzenegger, stating, ‘I was never actually on camera with him, not even once.’
He described how the actor had a remarkably convincing double, so good that viewers couldn’t distinguish him from the real Arnold Schwarzenegger on screen. The double was only used for close-up shots.
O’Donnell shared a fond memory of working with Clooney, noting the actor always kept things fun and cheerful on set.
He admitted they might have simply had too good a time, just relaxing and enjoying themselves.
Even though the film was famously unsuccessful, O’Donnell maintains he’s discovered people who enjoy it – or at least, he believes he has.
I often have young people tell me they loved the film, but I’m never sure if they’re being genuine or just teasing me.
Despite earning $238 million worldwide, Batman & Robin didn’t perform as well as Batman Forever. Batman Forever made $100 million more, even though it cost less to produce – its budget was $120 million compared to Batman & Robin‘s.
Because the movie didn’t do well in theaters, Warner Bros. decided not to make a sequel. It wasn’t until 2005, with Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins, that the character returned to the big screen.
Despite the misfire that was Batman & Robin, O’Donnell’s career didn’t falter for long.
Following his stint as Robin, he found new success in the 2000s with a string of notable projects.
He truly became a television icon thanks to his portrayal of Special Agent G. Callen in the hit CBS show, NCIS: Los Angeles.
Besides acting, O’Donnell has generally kept his personal life private, prioritizing time with his wife, Caroline Fentress, who he married in 1997.
The couple shares five children: Christopher 26, Charles, 24, Finley, 22, James 19, and Sophie 16.
Throughout his career, he’s supported several charities, notably through his involvement with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
