Kevin Costner looks tanned and relaxed in New York amid Yellowstone ‘killing off’ drama
As a long-time devotee of Western dramas, I must admit that this recent turn of events in Yellowstone has left me quite bewildered and disheartened. Having spent countless hours immersed in the rugged Montana landscape alongside John Dutton and his family, it feels like losing an old friend to see Costner’s sudden departure.
Despite the upheaval over his character John Dutton supposedly being written off in the fifth season premiere of Yellowstone, Kevin Costner appeared sun-kissed and at ease during his recent public appearance.
On a recent evening out in New York, the 69-year-old actor, who had been quiet about the passing of his character, seemed cheerful and upbeat.
The leading man appeared to have a fresh tan as he headed for dinner at Italian eatery Cucina.
He looked dapper in a long brown wool double-breasted coat over black turtleneck, and trousers.
Kevin finished off his outfit with a pair of earthy-toned cowboy boots in brown leather, and a cozy beige scarf loosely tied around his neck. His look was accentuated by a stylish salt-and-pepper beard.
Following this event, he spoke up for the first time since his Yellowstone character Dutton was taken out in the opening minutes of the second half of season five.
The show wasted no time by revealing in the opening moments that Dutton had passed by suicide by gunshot – after Costner acrimoniously exited the show amid a rumored feud with showrunner Taylor Sheridan.
On The Michael Smerconish Program on SiriusXM on Monday, Costner admitted: ‘To tell the truth, I wasn’t aware that it had been broadcasted the previous night.’
It’s quite a surprising coincidence! I feel like I’ve seen advertisements featuring my likeness everywhere, and each time, I can’t help but think, “Wow, am I not in this particular one?” It’s uncanny.
Here’s one way of paraphrasing your text:
‘I didn’t see it. I heard it’s a suicide, so that doesn’t make me want to rush to go see it,
‘I understood the situation, but I still believe they are intelligent individuals. Whatever challenges they face, they will find solutions. Initially, I had thought of two possible conclusions, but since things stretched out longer than expected, those endings no longer apply.’
When inquired about his feelings regarding the reported suicide, he stated: “I didn’t witness it. I’ve been told it was a suicide. That information doesn’t prompt me to immediately go and view it.
“They’re quite intelligent individuals, but there might be a false lead here. Regardless, they are skilled enough to solve the puzzle.
Many viewers found Dutton’s apparent suicide unexpected given his usual demeanor, but later discoveries revealed it was staged as a murder instead, a twist that emerged following several actors disclosing they had not been informed about Kevin Costner’s character, John Dutton, leaving the show.
Costner left the series due to scheduling issues with his Western film series, Horizon, causing disappointment among fans as his character was written out.
A flood of reactions poured onto social media, expressing the collective sentiment of fans as they bid farewell to their cherished character in the wrapping up of the modern Western TV show.
Due to the relentless struggles John Dutton faced throughout his life, viewers found it unacceptable, arguing that he wouldn’t take his own life.
@Thecraftyturtle said, ‘Ok no way John Dutton killed himself. They did his character dirty!!’
@KayCee1771 here, let me tell you, I wasn’t prepared for how #Yellowstone kicked off! And @AmberLee_0123, just five minutes in and this show has me reeling – I’m definitely NOT okay!
@FolkToe exclaimed ‘#Yellowstone Run, Jamie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!’ which hinted at the involvement of Dutton’s son, Jamie (played by Wes Bentley).
It’s not entirely unexpected that Jamie could face blame, given that the previous episode of the show, over two years back, depicted Jamie discussing several methods to eliminate his father with his romantic partner, Sarah Atwood (played by Dawn Olivieri), in a less-than-innocent manner.
I shared with Jamie that certain entities specialize in staging incidents to make it appear as though deaths were accidental or due to natural causes, such as a heart attack.
As the story unfolded further, it grew increasingly apparent that Sarah appeared to have orchestrated events herself, manipulating John’s demise to give the impression of a suicide… in reality, concealing a murder.
@thetvescape said, ‘Wait, so now it’s looking more and more likely that the “suicide” was staged!’
According to BroGod4Life, there are suspicions that someone like Sarah, Jamie, or another individual might be involved in the events surrounding John Dutton’s supposed suicide attempt, as they don’t believe he did it on his own. However, if proof is available, it could take time to surface and confirm these suspicions.
Following Sarah publicly verifying her role in Governor Dutton’s demise, she unexpectedly appeared at Jamie’s residence, attired casually and bearing champagne flutes.
She found it unexpected that he was crying about his father, noting that she believed this is exactly what he had desired.
Sarah wondered whom the tears were intended for, as Jamie stated that his father and his political life had ended on that very day.
@thetvescape commented, ‘Is anyone else excited about the point when Beth finally outperforms Sarah? Me too.’
Heidi Obscura posted, “It was Sarah who did it. She and her poor wig,” while its1stclassCAM said, “#YELLOWSTONE: Sarah allegedly put a hit on John and made it appear as if it were a suicide.
Fans were enraged, just like @jdh_85 who exclaimed, “I can’t fathom how they eliminated John Dutton! Hang on tight, it’s going to be a bumpy and thrilling journey from hereon.
@AATHobby pointed out that ‘@Yellowstone’ poorly handled revealing #kevincostner’s death. The secret gathering and then suddenly everyone knew he was deceased, very disappointing. Here’s hoping they improved on the rest of the plot.
@XavierJ5284 insisted, ‘Yeah I think this season of #Yellowstone is going to be trash.’
@MidwestRicky commented, ‘#Yellowstone made a major mistake. Spoiled an excellent series. They shouldn’t have written off John Dutton.’
@TheBOLGuy added, ‘They really unalived my guy in #yellowstone ⁉️⁉️ I’m pissed.’
@thetvescape also pointed out, ‘Jamie had a hand in the deaths of BOTH of his fathers.’
Previously, it became known that Jamie was not biologically related to John Dutton; instead, John had adopted him. This was discovered when John traced Jamie’s biological father, Garrett Randall, played by Will Patton.
Upon discovering that Garrett had orchestrated a hit against the entire Dutton family, Jamie took matters into his own hands and ended up killing his biological father personally, while he was campaigning for the governorship.
2023 rumors circulated that Kevin Costner might depart from the series due to reports of a creative disagreement between him and the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan.
Kevin Costner’s legal representative, Marty Singer, has refuted allegations suggesting that Costner declined to work on the series beyond a single week during Season 5’s second part, instead opting for a different scenario.
Last summer, Singer stated unequivocally that the notion that Kevin worked just a single week on the second half of Season 5 of Yellowstone was completely false.
‘It’s ridiculous — and anyone suggesting it shouldn’t be believed for one second,’ he added.
Filming clashed with Kevin Costner’s intention to make his first movie in two decades, titled “Horizon,” which was the initial part of a planned four-installment Western film series.
In June 2024, Costner officially announced via an Instagram post that he wouldn’t be featured in Season 5 Part 2 at all.
In simpler terms, Kevin Costner has shared that he won’t be able to carry on with Season 5B or any further seasons of Yellowstone, a series we both appreciate, after dedicating over a year and a half to working on Horizon and fulfilling all its necessary tasks while also contemplating the show.
He shared, “That experience significantly transformed me, and I must say, I adored it. I believe you felt the same way. Just wanted to inform you that I won’t be coming back, but I cherish the bond we’ve built, and I look forward to catching up at the movies.
Some viewers speculated that the sudden demise of Dutton, as portrayed by series creator Taylor Sheridan, might have been a symbolic gesture or parting shot towards Kevin Costner, following reports of a disagreement between them.
@LJB1308 perceived the episode as an apparent snub or jab towards Costner from Sheridan, given their disagreements.
@cmadmax suggested that Kostner might have intentionally upset Sheridan by announcing his departure from #Yellowstone. It was a significant letdown, and it seems like both individuals have sizable egos.
Kevin Costner stated, “I won’t return for this season as I’ll be busy shooting a film series that will flop.” To which Taylor Sheridan replied confidently, “I bet you, we’ll eliminate your character within the first seven minutes.
User @SimplyTasha08 expressed frustration, stating that they’re disappointed with how the show ended due to what they perceive as poor quality writing. They feel the fans and Kevin Costner (John Dutton) deserved a better conclusion, and they question whether they will support future shows by Taylor Sheridan. The user also predicts that the ratings for Yellowstone may decline as a result of this perceived laziness in writing. #Yellowstone is used to express their feelings about the show.
The news of a sixth season following Beth and Rip have come as a surprise to some fans.
It’s been said that the pair portrayed on screen may have discussed the possibility of appearing together in the Yellowstone prequel titled The Madison, which stars Michelle Pfeiffer.
In April, when asked about the prospect of a sixth season, Reilly expressed his focus on wrapping up Yellowstone with as much dedication, emotion, and affection as possible. He mentioned he’s currently preparing for this task, which is what he’s most focused on at the moment.
Beyond that point, there are debates taking place, but remember not to blindly trust everything you come across. Some of it might just be meaningless chatter.
Additionally, Paramount Network has commissioned a new spin-off titled “1944.” This series is set to continue the narrative started by the prequels, “1883” and “1923,” focusing on yet another generation of the Dutton family’s history.
