Five Nights at Freddy’s was the most-complained about movie of 2023
As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for horror and a knack for spotting trends, I can confidently say that the British Board of Film Classification’s (BBFC) annual report has piqued my interest more than any other movie-related document in recent memory. The revelation that Five Nights at Freddy’s was the most complained about movie of last year due to its 15 rating is, frankly, music to my ears.
Last year, Five Nights at Freddy’s was the film that received the highest number of complaints, as reported by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC).
As a gamer, I’ve just learned from their latest report that last year’s horror game was the one that sparked the most controversy, thanks to its mature 15 rating.
The BBFC mentioned that out of the 26 complaints, they came from individuals below 15 years old, as the content was rated unsuitable for their age group.
17 grievances trailed Billie Eilish Live At The O2, a performance that, like its initial 15 rating, drew criticism from younger viewers. Later, it was revised to expunge explicit language and re-rated as a 12A.

The storyline of “Five Nights at Freddy’s” originates from a popular video game series, where it portrays a nighttime security guard in a pizzeria. This unsuspecting individual uncovers that the animatronic mascots are haunted by the restless spirits of children who have been possessed.
The film featuring Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, and Matthew Lillard was a massive success when it premiered, earning more than $291 million worldwide while only costing $20 million to produce.
In August, Lillard announced that filming for the sequel would start in October, and the movie is expected to be released next year.
Back in 2024, Hutcherson shared with Variety that the sequel would be unveiled earlier then. He expressed, “Fans are incredible and truly dedicated. Being involved in it was an absolute thrill and an extraordinary experience for me.
Initially, we anticipated it might resonate with viewers. However, I must admit, nobody, not even those close to us, foresaw the level of connection it ended up creating.
“I’m dying to get back on set. Emma Tammi, our director, was fantastic, and it was such a fun world to play in. I’m excited to see what they are doing next.”
Five Nights at Freddy’s is available to buy and rent on digital platforms right now.
