Bridget Jones fans left fuming as romcom will skip cinemas and ONLY be streamed on little-known platform
As a die-hard Bridget Jones fan who has followed her journey through thick and thin, I must express my disappointment with the decision to release Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy exclusively on streaming platforms instead of hitting movie theaters. This loveable character has been a staple in my life for decades, providing endless laughter, relatability, and a touch of British charm.
This week, enthusiasts of Bridget Jones couldn’t contain their excitement upon catching a first glimpse of the fourth and concluding chapter in the movie series, featuring Renée Zellweger reprising her role.
On Tuesday, an eagerly awaited sneak peek for Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy was unveiled, revealing our beloved character navigating single parenthood after the demise of her husband Mark Darcy (portrayed by Colin Firth). In this new phase of her life as a widowed mother of two, she’s dipping her toes back into dating – and yes, Tinder is said to make an appearance.
Nonetheless, the audience expressed disappointment upon learning that the upcoming film featuring One Day actor Leo Woodall would bypass cinema screens for a direct release on Peacock in early February, rather than having a theatrical debut. Unsurprisingly, this decision sparked a flurry of criticism online.
Speaking about X, which was once called Twitter, someone recently shared: ‘Releasing the newest Bridget Jones film directly to streaming platforms is a clear sign of economic downturn… don’t they understand that numerous white women would choose this as their Galentine’s Day theater outing?’
One person replied and argued: ‘That’s not a recession indicator. It’s just bad decision making,’ while someone else questioned: ‘The Bridget Jones series going from making hundreds of millions at the box office to being dumped unceremoniously on streaming????’
Another user commented: ‘This seems unbelievable that a film which earned over $200 million, similar to Bridget Jones’s Baby, is going to stream in the US. I really hope it hits theaters here so I can watch it, slightly tipsy on expensive theater wine.’
I’m not much of a fan of the BRIDGET JONES movies, though I might have watched the initial one. Frankly, I can’t recall the total count now. However, it seems quite bizarre to me that this film will be released directly for streaming.
After seeing the trailer, I’m not particularly excited about it, but I can understand why it could be a hit at the movies,” they commented.
And another person said: ‘On Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy going to streaming: There are those who haven’t seen the trailer/read the book who don’t get it. There are those who’ve done both and totally get why it’s a Peacock exclusive. Still could have tried to put this in theaters as well…’
However, a different person pointed out: ‘I think it’s just a us distribution thing, because it’s getting a cinema release basically everywhere else.’
Another person asserted: ‘It will have a theatrical premiere worldwide, except in the U.S., where it will go directly to streaming platforms instead. This is due to the fact that the previous two films didn’t perform well in American cinemas.’
Back in the spring of 2001, I had the pleasure of witnessing the initial screening of Bridget Jones’s Diary, an enchanting film that graced us with the charms of Hugh Grant and Jim Broadbent. This captivating production managed to rake in a staggering $71,543,427 at the box offices across the United States and Canada.
In North America, specifically the United States and Canada, the sequel titled “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason” hit cinemas in November 2004. At the box office, it generated a revenue of approximately $40 million.
Simultaneously, the third film of Bridget Jones’s series, “Bridget Jones’s Baby,” hit cinema screens across the U.S. and Canada in September 2016, earning a total of $24,252,420 at the box office.
In the film, Bridget discovers she’s pregnant, and by the end, she marries Mark, the successful attorney with whom she’s had complicated feelings throughout the trilogy. Notably, it is revealed that Mark is the baby’s father.
Yet, in the fourth novel titled “Mad About The Boy,” Mark meets an unfortunate demise while working overseas as a human rights attorney. This leaves Bridget a widow, and the story unfolds as she faces the challenges of single parenthood.
Apart from that, she decides to leave her TV job for picking up her kids from school instead, where humorous situations might occur as she finds it challenging to match pace with the ‘Fashionable Moms’.
