High Potential season 1, episode 7 recap and review: "One of Us"

As a dedicated fan who has been following High Potential since its premiere, I must say that the fall finale was nothing short of exhilarating! The way Morgan managed to save Ava from danger, while also solving the case, was a testament to her quick wit and unwavering determination.

In simpler terms, the climactic episode of the first season of “High Potential” was particularly powerful. Can you explain how Morgan and Ava managed to escape from their predicament in the seventh episode of the series?

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from High Potential season 1, episode 7.

On my day off, I choose to take Ava to where I work. She’s been curious about it, and I thought this would be a great opportunity for her to see what I do. However, things turned out to be quite different from what she anticipated. Instead of an enlightening experience, she finds herself in the midst of more chaos than she bargained for. Yet, it offers her a glimpse into the lengths I’ll go to safeguard our well-being.

Initially, Morgan failed to notice that Ava was still inside the building. It had been assumed she’d leave when two suspects entered armed with a bomb warning. Even Karadec thought Ava had departed, based on a statement from Morgan. Luckily, Ava remained unharmed, but this incident prompted Morgan to work diligently in resolving the case.

A look at the problem of having just one suspect in High Potential

In the final episode of “High Potential”‘s current season, we were subtly reminded that police officers aren’t infallible when it comes to crime-solving. They often develop a preferred suspect and then search for proof supporting their assumption. This approach can sometimes result in overlooking valuable information and evidence that might contradict their initial theory.

Previously with Karadec, we witnessed a similar situation during the season. Although Karadec turned out to be correct in that instance, such outcomes aren’t guaranteed. In this specific event, the police made an error, leaving it to those within the station to untangle the mystery. Meanwhile, Karadec, Soto, and others were positioned outside the precinct, offering assistance as best they could from there.

Indeed, as anticipated, Morgan played a crucial role in identifying the true culprit. Collaboration remained key throughout this investigation. From an external perspective, Morgan relied on Karadec’s interpretation of the clues, while Karadec leaned on Morgan for insights gained from within.

Morgan’s brain doesn’t always work in real time

One aspect I’ve appreciated in High Potential is watching how Morgan absorbs information, yet her brain doesn’t always swiftly put together all the puzzle pieces. This series demonstrates that it can sometimes take Morgan a while to connect the dots. In this particular episode, we don’t follow the case; instead, we delve into the circumstances within the precinct.

Morgan observes several things regarding the couple who are allegedly planning to explode the precinct. One detail that catches her attention is that the woman appears pregnant. This could explain her strong motivation to clear her partner of a murder charge, as she firmly believes in his innocence.

From the very beginning, the sizeable hint about the bomb should have been evident. However, it was only after the other individual momentarily paused to confirm whether there was a bomb or not that Morgan managed to connect all the dots. Interestingly, the sniffer dog didn’t detect any issues with the parcel delivered to the station, and under normal circumstances, a pregnant woman wouldn’t expose herself to dangerous chemicals used in bomb-making. Intriguingly, there was no bomb inside the box at all.

Morgan’s momma bear comes out in High Potential

It caught me off guard when Morgan displayed kindness towards the woman who had been intimidating her and everyone else at the precinct. However, it wasn’t until later that we understood why – Morgan’s protective instincts kicked in once she realized Ava was in the precinct. From then on, she had to escalate her actions and manipulate those threatening the precinct.

Eventually, it was apparent that everything was merely an act. She would never stand by someone who jeopardized her daughter’s safety. Although she could maintain the facade until the end, it hinted at some external influences affecting her. She seems to be adopting strategies from Soto and Karadec since she found herself in hot water right from the start of the series.

Over the span of seven episodes, Morgan’s transformation into a consultant has been quite evident. We’ve witnessed fellow officers at the station gradually acknowledging her opinions and showing respect for her. This shift in perception has been significant for some members of the precinct, marking an end to her former label as “The Cleaning Lady”.

wrapping up the 2024 episodes on a high note, we’re taking a short break before returning with more exciting content. This particular episode, however, was particularly gripping and filled with drama, even though it predominantly took place within the precinct.

High Potential returns on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 9/8c on ABC. Catch up on the series on Hulu.
