India Game Developer Conference (IGDC) 2024 Day 1 Highlights

Hosted by the Game Developer Association of India (GDAI), the six-thousand-strong crowd attended the 16th annual event on its first day. The International Game Developers Conference (IGDC) expo also kicked off, featuring more than one hundred gaming developers and publishers from around the world and locally.

On the first day, a significant moment was when Mr. Sanjay Jaju, the Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, addressed the media. He emphasized that the creation of the Indian Institute of Creative Technology would lead to substantial growth in the field of video gaming, as he put it, “we anticipate significant advancement in skill development within the Video Gaming Sector due to this institution’s formation.

Mr. Jaju additionally highlighted the government’s dedication to fostering the gaming industry, viewing it as a dynamic, creative domain separate from the real-money gambling scene. He underscored that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) will collaborate closely with GDAI to cultivate a robust pool of talent, aiming to establish India as a dominant force in the international gaming market.

On the first day, Mr. Sanjay Jaju served as one of the speakers, and he shared his insights and vision about the future direction of the gaming industry under the theme “Molding Tomorrow: Perspectives and Foresight for the Gaming Sector.

GDAI has now officially launched

At the IGDC 2024 event, the Global Digital Asset Integration (GDAI) was officially unveiled. In this occasion, Chairperson Sridhar Muppidi emphasized the organization’s goal to create a unified environment for industry development, policy endorsement, and strategic partnerships with different ministries, aiming to establish India as a leading force in the global gaming market.

In India, the gaming sector has experienced substantial growth with over 500 million users and nearly 100 billion rupees in earnings. However, it continues to encounter regulatory hurdles such as distinguishing itself from real-money games and dealing with scattered supervision. Mr. Muppidi suggested that the GDAI considers the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting as the ideal central authority for the gaming industry.

2024’s IGDC opening day featured significant debates centered around various themes, such as:

Distinguished individuals like Wilhelm Taht, Scopely’s Senior Vice President, and Abhimanyu Kumar, Co-Founder of Naavik, graced the stage with their presence on day 1. They offered valuable insights into ‘A Call to Action’ and lessons learned from India’s leading games such as MONOPOLY GO!, respectively. Additionally, they discussed ‘Five Key Emerging Trends in Mobile F2P’ to wrap up the first day of events.
