Check out gorgeous new illustrations from the world of ice and fire

As a long-time fan of George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire,” I must say that this collection of artwork celebrating the 10th anniversary of “The World of Ice and Fire” is nothing short of breathtaking. Each piece, from the intricate details of the jousting at Harrenhal to the haunting visions of Daenerys Targaryen in Qarth, transports us back to Westeros and Essos in a way that words alone cannot.

Approximately ten years ago, a comprehensive guide titled “The World of Ice and Fire” was published, delving into the mythology that underpins George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” series, which was later brought to screens by HBO as “Game of Thrones”. To this day, it remains a valuable resource for dedicated fans.

Elio García and Linda Antonsson collaborated closely with George R.R. Martin on the creation of “The World of Ice and Fire” and later “The Rise of the Dragon,” a companion volume to his book “Fire & Blood.” To mark the anniversary of “The World of Ice and Fire,” they invited various artists to produce art that might have been featured in the book, which they then showcased on their website, Westeros.org.

On this Wednesday, take a moment to appreciate the artwork showcased here. First up, you’ll find a depiction of Sunfyre, the dragon ridden by King Aegon II Targaryen during the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. This drama is being brought to life on screen in the upcoming series, “House of the Dragon”. The artistry behind this piece is by Ertaç Altınöz.

As a passionate film enthusiast, let me share that Rudolf Hima’s forthcoming portrayal introduces the elusive character known as Grey Ghost, another dragon hailing from the epoch of the Dance. However, this particular dragon has yet to make an appearance in “House of the Dragon.

René Aigner paints a captivating picture of Harrenhal Castle in ruins, during the grand tournament where Rhaegar Targaryen crowned Lyanna Stark as Queen of Love and Beauty – an event that ignited Robert’s Rebellion, several years prior to the timeframe depicted in Game of Thrones.

Dragons have made their return, and so has Ertaç Altınöz, presenting us with a depiction of the dawning dragon, a character significant in the latter stages of The Dance of the Dragons.

Rudolf Jima captures an illustration depicting Tyraxes, Joffrey Velaryon’s dragon, poised to swiftly devour a goat within the Dragonpit of King’s Landing.

We return to the Tourney at Harrenhal for a depiction of the mysterious Knight of the Laughing Tree, illustrated by Joshua Cairós:

Could it be that dragons were mentioned? Here you go, it’s Helaena Targaryen on her dragon, Dreamfyre, once more depicted by Ertaç Altınöz, as seen in the series House of the Dragon.

Subsequently, Rudolph Hima depicts the journey of the dragon named Stormcloud, who plays a significant role in the Dance of the Dragons.

It’s clear that certain motifs are becoming apparent in these artworks we’re examining. Now, let’s take a look at a depiction by artist Mark Smylie, featuring jousting scenes from the Tourney at Harrenhal.

In this lovely image by René Aigner, a young Ned Stark delivers the sword Dawn to Ashara Dayne:

During a visit to the distant city of Qarth, Daenerys Targaryen encounters visions while at the House of the Undying – these were the first images seen from the contemporary storylines within the “Song of Ice and Fire” novels.

In the end, Fran Vegas portrays the remnants of Summerhall, a castle that was destroyed by the overconfidence of the Targaryens…or perhaps their optimism. Fingers crossed, we might witness this event in the concluding part of the upcoming Game of Thrones spinoff series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

Appreciation goes out to all these talented artists for their outstanding creations, and a big thank you to García and Antonsson for expertly organizing this fantastic event!
