Rumors suggest a major Avengers member won’t appear in the upcoming movies, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Which former Avengers hero reportedly won’t be in the next two crossover movies?
I’m hearing from reliable sources, like James Mack on X, that Don Cheadle probably won’t be back as War Machine in the upcoming Doomsday and Secret Wars movies. It’s a bummer because he’s been playing the character since Iron Man 2 back in 2010, taking over from Terrence Howard, and a lot of fans, including me, really love his take on the role.
Don Cheadle is a rare actor who has appeared in every phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He first appeared in Iron Man 2 (Phase 1) and has since been in Iron Man 3, Avengers: Age of Ultron (Phase 2), Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Captain Marvel, and Avengers: Endgame (all Phase 3). More recently, he’s been in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and What If…? (both Phase 4), as well as Secret Invasion (Phase 5).
As a big Marvel fan, I’m starting to worry about Don Cheadle’s future as War Machine. If he’s not in Doomsday or Secret Wars, it doesn’t seem like we’ll be seeing him in anything else Marvel Studios has planned for Phase 6. There’s no word of him being in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and I haven’t seen any rumors about him joining any of the new Disney+ shows like VisionQuest, more Spider-Man, or even the continuing seasons of Daredevil: Born Again. It’s looking less and less likely he’ll be back after those big Avengers movies.
The recent Disney+ series, Secret Invasion, revealed that Rhodey had actually been a Skrull imposter for some time – potentially since the events of Captain America: Civil War. This upset many Marvel fans because it meant Rhodey didn’t know his close friend, Tony Stark, had sacrificed himself to save the world in Avengers: Endgame.
Marvel Studios might be waiting until after their current storyline, the Multiverse Saga, to bring back the character War Machine. There simply isn’t enough space in the upcoming Avengers movies to give his story the proper attention it deserves. Originally, Marvel planned to address this storyline in a movie called ‘Armor Wars,’ but that project has been delayed repeatedly and doesn’t seem to be a high priority for the studio anymore, meaning it might not be made at all.
You can watch all movies and shows with War Machine on Disney+. The next Avengers movie, ‘Doomsday,’ comes out December 18, 2026, and ‘Secret Wars’ will be released on December 17, 2027.
