Turns out HBO's might actually be working on two Game of Thrones spinoffs featuring iconic characters from Thrones

As a die-hard fan who has lived and breathed the world of Westeros since the days of yore (2011), I can’t help but feel a twinge of excitement at the prospect of new stories set within this enchanting universe. The anticipation for an official spinoff that continues the narrative from our beloved Game of Thrones has been as unpredictable and dramatic as the Seven Kingdoms themselves.

Ever since “Game of Thrones” concluded in 2019, enthusiasts have been anxiously anticipating HBO’s decision to launch an authentic sequel for this Emmy-acclaimed series.

Currently, HBO has produced several shows set within the world of Westeros, such as “House of the Dragon” which is currently two seasons in with a third on the horizon, and “A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms” scheduled for release in 2025. These shows are prequels to “Game of Thrones,” taking place before its events. However, what many fans are eagerly anticipating is a true spinoff that carries forward the story from “Thrones” and brings back some familiar faces from the original series.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but speculate about the potential for a Game of Thrones spinoff, given the series’ dramatic finale. There were numerous avenues HBO could have pursued, and it feels like only a matter of patience before they greenlight a worthy successor. Although no official announcements have been made regarding active development, whispers suggest we might be in store for a spinoff focusing on two of Thrones’ most iconic and adored characters.

Turns out the Jon Snow spinoff isn’t dead

“The Jon Snow spinoff featuring Kit Harington, which appears to be ongoing, was initially announced for development in June 2022. The project has been picking up steam, with fans eagerly anticipating the chance to see Harington return to his iconic role.

Sadly, in April 2024, Harington confirmed that the project had been temporarily halted and suggested it might not resume. In an interview with ScreenRant, he explained that the team couldn’t find a compelling story they were all equally passionate about, so they decided to pause work on it for the moment.

It appeared as though the project had come to a close, but there’s now speculation that the Jon Snow spinoff may not be completely gone.

Casey Bloys, head of HBO, fueled fan speculation during a press conference on November 12th, stating that the network hasn’t completely dismissed the idea of a spinoff and hinting at potential future plans with the phrase “maybe we’ll try again.” Although he didn’t provide much detail, this statement seems to imply that discussions about the show are ongoing, and they might be brainstorming ways to involve Kit Harington once more.

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but feel intrigued by the possibility that our favorite series might be getting a new chapter. The main character we’ve followed throughout this epic journey could potentially star in a spinoff, should it ever come to fruition.

George R.R. Martin hints that an Arya Stark spinoff is in the works

It’s been suggested by HBO that a Jon Snow series might still occur, and now the writer who penned the books that sparked the franchise has given a subtle indication that another show may be under development.

In a recent blog update, George R.R. Martin disclosed that he’s had talks with Maisie Williams (Arya Stark from the series) about an undisclosed project, hinting that it might be exciting. While he didn’t provide details to avoid jinxing it, there’s speculation among fans and industry insiders that this secret project could potentially focus on Williams’ character, suggesting a possible spinoff.

Indeed, it’s enticing to think about a spin-off series focusing on Arya Stark, which could lead us to unexplored regions within Westeros, areas we haven’t seen on the original show. Remember, Arya concluded her journey on the show by embarking on a new adventure, venturing into lands that lay beyond where the maps of Westeros extend.

This new season provides an opportunity for the show to delve into fresh relationships and venture to places it has never been before, enriching the universe of “Game of Thrones” in a potentially breathtaking and thrilling saga. And we’d be thrilled to have more of Williams portraying one of the series’ most iconic characters!

Absolutely, thus far, there haven’t been any formal declarations confirming if these shows will develop beyond mere ideas. However, it seems reasonable to speculate that HBO might eventually produce a genuine spinoff for the series in the future.
