Trump picks Fox News host Pete Hegseth for Defense secretary

As a seasoned cinephile with decades of television viewing under my belt, I must say that the recent news of Pete Hegseth joining the Department of Defense comes as an unexpected twist in this ongoing political drama. Having been a regular on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” for years and enjoying the luxuries that come with being a high-profile TV host, it seems rather unconventional to leave such comforts behind for the rigors of government service.

The newly elected President, Donald Trump, has chosen commentator Pete Hegseth from Fox News to head the Department of Defense, marking a significant move as this will be the first time an on-air personality from the conservative-leaning network is joining the incoming administration. More such appointments could follow.

On Tuesday, it was announced that Hegseth, a highly-decorated war veteran who saw service in both Iraq and Afghanistan, will be departing from the network right away, as per a spokesperson for Fox News.

As a devoted admirer, I’d like to share that I’ve been gracing the weekend edition of Fox & Friends’ morning program since 2017, teaming up with Will Cain and Rachel Campos-Duffy. Prior to this, I was a contributing member at the network, starting my journey in 2014. And before that, you might recognize me as an officer in the Army National Guard.

Trump stated, “Pete is strong-willed, intelligent, and deeply committed to ‘America First.’ With Pete leading the way, our adversaries should take heed – our military will regain its greatness once more, and America will always stand firm.

Several commentators from Fox News are anticipated to take up roles within the incoming Trump administration. On Monday, it was announced that former Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Tom Homan – a frequent guest on the network – has been appointed as the Border Chief for the Trump administration.

However, Hegseth’s departure comes as a shock, given his permanent hosting role and the substantial income and benefits associated with a prominent position in television broadcasting.

There has been chatter inside the network that others may follow him.

In recent times, the constant change in the White House administrations and cable news networks is quite frequent, largely because there are many more opinion shows being aired by these broadcasting platforms now.

Previously serving as the White House Press Secretary, Kayleigh McEnany subsequently joined Fox News following Donald Trump’s defeat in the 2020 presidential election.

After completing a two-year tenure as White House Press Secretary under President Biden, Jen Psaki has transitioned to MSNBC, where she now hosts shows on Sundays and Mondays.

Hegseth is a graduate of Princeton University, and has a graduate degree from Harvard University. For his military service, he was decorated with two Bronze Stars, as well as a Combat Infantryman Badge.

Hegseth is a best selling author for Fox News Books, the network’s publishing imprint.
