Marvel unveils first look at the MCU's terrifying new villain

As someone who has been following the Marvel Cinematic Universe since its humble beginnings with Iron Man, I can confidently say that the franchise knows how to deliver a formidable villain. From the Winter Soldier to Thanos, they’ve consistently left me on the edge of my seat, gasping for breath as these larger-than-life characters wreaked havoc across the silver screen.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe certainly excels at creating formidable adversaries. Ever since its launch in 2008 with the release of Iron Man, the franchise has consistently honed its skills in producing outstanding superhero films.

It’s true that some missteps occurred during the journey, with many viewers finding several antagonists from earlier films to be among the franchise’s least impressive. Furthermore, there have been exceptional Marvel Comics villains whose MCU interpretations fell short. However, there are also outstanding villains who continue to captivate audiences long after their debut: The Winter Soldier, Vulture, Loki, and the colossal Thanos (to name but a few).

Indeed, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has introduced a variety of formidable adversaries, such as colossal purple extraterrestrials who aim to decimate half the world’s population, vengeful deity assassins determined to eliminate Thor, and characters who have fallen from grace in compelling anti-hero narratives. As it continues to expand its roster of baddies in future projects, the MCU recently unveiled a chilling first glimpse of its next villain – and trust me, it’s downright terrifying.

Marvel unveils first official look at Harrison Ford’s Red Hulk

Marvel unveils first look at the MCU's terrifying new villain

Marvel Studios recently revealed a fresh trailer for “Captain America: Brave New World” at D23 Brazil, showcasing the first detailed glimpse of Harrison Ford as the Red Hulk. This is the second sneak peek for the 2025 film they’ve shared lately; the earlier one hinted at the enraged Hulk through a brief shot of his back. In contrast, this new trailer offers several close-ups of his face, making it clear that the character has been modeled after Harrison Ford.

Previously, a sneak peek of the character had been released online due to a teaser shown at the Stateside D23 event in September. However, this latest reveal marks the first time we see the character actively engaged. To say the least, he’s incredibly intimidating.

If you haven’t yet seen it, you can watch the trailer below:

In a new twist for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), actor Tyler Ford assumes the role of President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, taking over from the late William Hurt who portrayed the character in five previous MCU films. The character’s transition to the presidency reflects his evolution in the comics, as Ross was previously a general and Secretary of State before ascending to the nation’s highest office in the MCU continuity.

Ross has historically been a contentious figure within the franchise, yet he hasn’t assumed the role of an overt villain since “The Incredible Hulk.” His ongoing conflict with Bruce Banner has made it difficult for The Avengers to fully trust him, even during times when he was collaborating with them. However, his ambition to control them ultimately caused a rift among the team (until Thanos threatened the world and compelled them all to join forces once more).

It appears that his villainous past may resurface, as he follows his comic-book destiny and transforms into the Red Hulk. The reasons for this transformation remain unclear, but it could stem from his need to safeguard himself against future dangers following an attack earlier in the movie.

In his enraged state, it’s evident that the Red Hulk requires no protection. This massive, red titan promises to be a formidable adversary in the movie, and his appearance is undeniably authentic. The question remains if he will indeed act as the antagonist, or if he’s merely a response to other forces at play – a desperate reaction rather than an actual villain. It should be intriguing to watch the story unfold and uncover the truth about him.

Regardless of the approach, Marvel Studios is fulfilling a long-held desire among fans by introducing the Red Hulk character, and we’re incredibly excited to witness how he will impact “Captain America: Brave New World” and the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole.

Captain America: Brave New World arrives in movie theaters on February 14, 2025.
