Glen Powell Pitched Himself as Fox McCloud to Nintendo—and Actually Got the Role

Hollywood often portrays casting as a meticulous and artistic process. However, sometimes a story emerges that highlights the importance of genuine enthusiasm. Glen Powell’s dedication to landing the role of Fox McCloud in The Super Mario Bros. Movie is one of those stories.

Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri recently shared that Glen Powell didn’t simply try out for the role of Fox McCloud—he actively pursued it and made it happen.

And somehow, it worked.

A Superfan Shoots His Shot

While Illumination and Nintendo were talking about the Super Mario Bros. Movie, they were also secretly considering the possibility of including Star Fox characters and elements in the same universe.

What they didn’t expect? Powell calling them up out of nowhere with the exact same idea.

According to Illumination’s Chris Meledandri, Glen Powell was one of two actors who strongly expressed their desire to be involved with a Nintendo project. Powell specifically shared his deep love for the character Fox McCloud and his lifelong dream of appearing in a Star Fox movie.

While Nintendo wasn’t sure if Fox McCloud should even be in the movie, Powell was enthusiastically pushing for the character’s inclusion, acting like a lifelong fan finally getting their dream chance.

Perfect Timing—or Something More?

The strange thing is, Powell’s idea happened to match exactly what Meledandri and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto were already discussing.

Meledandri recalled thinking, ‘He doesn’t realize Miyamoto and I are discussing whether Star Fox will be included in the film,’ while Glen passionately shared his thoughts.

We often hear about actors vying for parts in Hollywood. However, it’s unusual when an actor seems to foresee a big change in a project – even before it’s announced – and then perfectly fits the new direction.

The Secret Casting Gamble

After deciding to feature Fox McCloud, Nintendo and Illumination were determined to keep it a secret. This meant they had to bring Powell on board with very strict confidentiality.

I told Glen I wanted to talk, but stressed it needed to be kept completely confidential, and that he couldn’t discuss it with anyone, according to Meledandri.

It was meant to be a surprising reveal, a moment designed to catch viewers off guard. Now, Powell was in on the secret.

Why Glen Powell Fit Fox McCloud

While being passionate isn’t always enough to get a job, Meledandri emphasized that Powell wasn’t simply excited—he was perfectly suited for the role.

Meledandri explained they envisioned a character with a certain charm and confidence, similar to Glen Powell, and felt he was a natural fit for the part. He described finding Powell as a lucky break.

Fox McCloud is a standout character – a bold and self-assured leader with a bit of attitude, and Michael Powell has consistently captured that in his portrayals. This wasn’t simply a fan getting their wish fulfilled; it was a perfect match between what the audience wanted and a smart casting choice.

A Rare Win for Organic Casting

Many industries feel artificial, but this story is a refreshing exception – it feels truly authentic.

Everything just clicked: the actor genuinely connected with the role, the creative team was already on the same page, and the opportunity arose naturally through good timing, passion, and a little bit of fortunate coincidence.

This also highlights a shift in how Nintendo works. In the past, they often licensed their popular characters with little oversight. Now, they’re being much more collaborative and thoughtful, and they’re even open to new ideas when they find the right partner with a great vision.

And for Glen Powell?

He didn’t just get cast. He called his shot—and Nintendo answered.
