I’m really excited about what James Gunn is building with the DCU! It’s not just Supergirl – Kara Zor-El – getting a spotlight, but we’re also getting Lobo, The Main Man! Now, he might look like your typical flashy villain, but trust me, there’s a lot more to him. I think Lobo could be huge for the DCU, opening up tons of story possibilities. He almost feels like a darker, edgier version of Nick Fury’s Phil Coulson from the early days of the MCU, someone who can really drive things forward.
Phil Coulson was a fan favorite character in the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He played a key role in linking the first films together and helped introduce the organization S.H.I.E.L.D. to viewers. Coulson was a force for good in the MCU, and his death ultimately inspired the Avengers to defeat Loki. Interestingly, the character Lobo could potentially have a similar effect on the DC Universe, though without Coulson’s positive qualities.
Who is Lobo in DC Comics?
Lobo is a bounty hunter and the last surviving member of his race, the Czarnians. He destroyed his entire species, though accounts vary – sometimes it’s depicted as a brutal massacre, and other times as a failed scientific experiment. While rare exceptions appear in some stories, Lobo is generally known as the Last Czarnian.
Lobo is a dangerous opponent because of his incredible healing ability. He doesn’t just recover from injuries – he can completely rebuild his entire body, even from the smallest drop of blood. This makes him virtually unkillable and a formidable fighter.
Lobo’s casual attitude towards right and wrong, combined with his love of violence and disregard for life, often puts him at odds with heroes. However, he’s fundamentally a mercenary who always prioritizes his next job. If someone like Batman can offer him a contract or force his hand, he’ll follow through. This unpredictability is what makes him such a compelling character in Supergirl – it’s often hard to know where his loyalties truly lie.
How Lobo Can Connect the DCU
Lobo is a distinctive character who has carved out a unique role for himself in the DC Universe. Throughout the comics, he’s teamed up with and battled numerous heroes. Whether he’s fighting Lanterns in the Injustice storyline or simply working as a bounty hunter, Lobo has a wide network of connections throughout the DC Universe, many of which align with what fans have already seen in the current DCU.
Lobo and Gardner have a long-standing rivalry, as previously discussed. Gardner once tried to train Guy to be an assassin, but Guy wasn’t capable of it. Their hatred for each other goes back years, and it would be interesting to explore that conflict within the wider DC Universe, perhaps even by attempting to bring Lobo to Oa for a trial.
Lobo and Superman have clashed many times throughout their history – in comic books, animated series, and even recent animated films. Lobo is frequently pitted against Superman because he’s a powerful opponent capable of giving him a real fight. He even appeared in the show Krypton, where he had a significant role in the history of Superman’s family and interacted with his ancestors.
Lobo consistently challenges Superman, appearing in stories from the Justice League and beyond. A particularly compelling narrative is DC Universe: Last Sons, which focuses on both characters as the last of their kind. This shared history creates a unique connection between Superman and Lobo, but could also lead to a major conflict if Superman were to discover Lobo’s horrific act of murdering his family – a revelation that would be deeply upsetting for him.
Amanda Waller has a complicated history with Lobo – she’s tried to both imprison and recruit him, even pitting him against the Justice League. Now that Waller is actively making plans within the DC Universe, her appearance in Peacemaker hints she might exploit the Sanctuary to find new recruits for her Task Force, and Lobo could be a key target.
Lobo has ties to many established DC Universe characters, and it’s likely we’ll see those relationships explored. Given his star power, it’s unlikely he’d only appear in one film – he’s probably intended for a significant role. Lobo could be hired by a villain like Brainiac to scout Earth, bringing a major intergalactic threat to our planet. Unlike the heroic Phil Coulson, Lobo would be a compelling villain and instigator of conflict.
Supergirl is a New Era for the DCU
The upcoming Supergirl project is noteworthy within the new DC Universe because it’s one of the first that James Gunn has personally written or directed. There were worries about the tone of recent DC projects, but Supergirl aims to address those concerns. While the character Lobo seems to fit Gunn’s usual style, he has the potential to be even more compelling with a different creative approach.
Supergirl has the potential to open up the DC Universe to a much wider galactic scope, and Lobo can serve as the character to lead the way. He can connect stories ranging from street-level crime to the horrors of Apokolips, bridging the gap between Earth and New Genesis. The film aims to present a fresh take on the DCU, expanding beyond Earth to explore distant worlds – something the Marvel Cinematic Universe was initially slow to do. Just as Phil Coulson brought the Avengers together, Lobo could be the key to unlocking a vast galaxy of villains and adventures for DC’s heroes.
