Hollywood media is buzzing, and this time they’ve found a surprising connection between a cartoon villain and real-world issues. Film critic Grace Randolph reviewed The Super Mario Bros. Movie and surprisingly argued that Bowser embodies ideas from what she calls the “toxic manosphere.”
Yes, really.
Apparently, critics haven’t improved their predictions, even after being way off with their review of The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
“Toxic Manosphere”? Over Bowser?
Randolph’s comments come directly from her review.
She believes Bowser and now Bowser Jr. come across as excessively malicious, going beyond typical cartoon villainy. She suggests this might be because their behavior echoes harmful ideas found in online spaces known for toxic masculinity, noting a similarity in their expressed viewpoints.
Let’s pause there.
Bowser, again voiced by Jack Black, is a classic villain with a very simple motivation: he keeps kidnapping Princess Peach, failing to win, and then attempting the same thing over and over. That’s all there is to his character.

Surprisingly, Randolph connects that idea to how men talk about themselves online today.
It’s the kind of reach that would make even Stretch Armstrong blush.
A Pattern of Missing the Point
This isn’t the first time Randolph has gone against popular opinion. He also publicly disliked The Super Mario Bros. Movie when it came out in 2023, even though most people loved it.
When the film was first released, critics weren’t very impressed, but general moviegoers loved it and made it a huge hit, giving it excellent audience ratings. The difference in opinion was striking.

And now? We’re seeing the same script play out again with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
Rather than discussing what the film is – its vibrant visuals, nods to fans, and familiar Nintendo feel – Randolph focuses on ideas and meanings that aren’t actually present in the movie.
Turning Mario Into a Political Battlefield
The biggest issue here isn’t just a bad take—it’s what it represents.
Nintendo has generally managed to avoid the problems that often hurt big movie franchises today. They focus on simple, enjoyable experiences without trying to push specific messages or viewpoints. It’s just about having fun.
That’s exactly why audiences show up.

When people criticize Bowser – a fantastical dragon-turtle villain – by applying real-world political ideas, it often feels like they’re imposing their own beliefs rather than offering genuine insight.
And frankly, audiences are tired of it.
Even Her Own Review Undercuts the Argument
Ironically, Randolph’s own review contradicts her broader criticism.
At one point, she admits that Bowser is actually the most compelling character in the film:
She said her favorite character in the movie was definitely Bowser. She found him surprisingly funny and complex, with a lot more depth than expected.

So which is it?
Is Bowser a well-developed, entertaining villain—or a stand-in for modern social commentary?
It can’t be both.
Critics vs. Audience—Round Two
It’s happening again: a clear split is forming between what Hollywood critics like and what general audiences want. Critics seem to be focused on analyzing everything for deeper meaning, even in kids’ movies, while audiences are simply looking for entertainment, a break from reality, and a bit of familiar comfort.
And history suggests we already know how this ends.

If The Super Mario Galaxy Movie performs like the first Mario movie, negative reviews won’t stop people from seeing it. Viewers are simply looking for fun entertainment, not a serious message.
They’re looking for Mario.
Final Thoughts
Labeling Bowser as representative of the “toxic manosphere” feels like an overreach, but it highlights a bigger issue with how men are often portrayed in movies and games.
These days, it feels like every story is used to make a point about current issues, and that can take away from its original, simple meaning.

With Mario, that straightforwardness is intentional. Sometimes, a bad guy is simply a bad guy – there doesn’t need to be a complex reason behind it.
