Laverne Cox breaks silence on whether she’ll leave US after Trump’s election win
As a dedicated follower and ardent advocate for equality and human rights, I find myself deeply troubled by the recent developments regarding transgender individuals in America under the new administration. Having had the privilege to walk in the shoes of a trans woman, I can only imagine the fear and uncertainty that my fellow transgender sisters and brothers are feeling right now.
Laverne Cox has finally spoken up about her potential decision to relocate outside the U.S. following Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election.
In a recent interview with Variety, the 52-year-old actress, known for her work as a transgender individual and her recent appearance on the red carpet at the InStyle Imagemaker Awards, discussed the idea of relocating to another country.
Actress from Orange Is The New Black shared her concern, along with some transgender friends, about the transphobic language used by the Trump campaign. They are contemplating leaving the United States due to these concerns.
She said: ‘We’re doing research on different cities in Europe and in the Caribbean.’
As a devoted supporter, I’d go so far as to draw a parallel between the Trump administration’s hostile stance towards the LGBTQIA+ community and the discriminatory policies of the early 1900s German Reich.
She clarified: “Before the rise of Nazism, there existed a vibrant community of LGBTQ+ individuals in Berlin. However, during this time, they targeted Jewish citizens, immigrants, as well as LGBTQ+ individuals.
‘I’d prefer not to let fear overwhelm me, but I must admit I am anxious. Given my public standing and advantages, I feel apprehensive, and this anxiety is heightened because I am in the public eye. It seems like I might be a potential target. The fact that approximately $100 million was spent on anti-trans advertisements is troubling indeed.’
Trump is set to take office as the 47th President of the United States following his decisive victory over Kamala Harris in a significant electoral win on Tuesday.
Trump continues to express strong opinions regarding transgender issues in the United States, recently announcing a significant policy proposal during a town hall meeting on Fox News’ “The Faulkner Focus,” which featured an all-female panel and took place only a few weeks prior to his re-election.
Trump stated that, when confronted with the topic of transgender participation in women’s sports, he intends to simply prohibit such involvement.
‘It’s such an easy question,’ he said as he smiled.
‘Everybody in the room and you know that answer, we’re not going to let it happen.
The president-elect mentioned that there was a volleyball game the day before, and he wondered if I had watched it. He then noted that one of the players had transitioned from male to female. Given the sensitivity of this topic, it’s important to be mindful in discussions about it as making an incorrect or insensitive comment could potentially impact your political future negatively.
As a devoted follower, I noticed that the previous president appeared to be alluding to Blaire Fleming, a standout volleyball player at San Jose State University.
This season, four schools have chosen to forgo their games against San Jose State University due to safety considerations, with Fleming, a senior player wearing a red jersey, being the supposed cause of these decisions.
More recently, they garnered widespread attention due to an incident where they aggressively struck another player with a ball, causing her to turn red. The commentator themselves pointed out the player’s flushed cheeks following the impact.
Trump told the group of women, “I also witnessed a powerful hit. That ball was struck so forcefully it struck the girl on the head.
‘Other people even in volleyball they’ve been permanently, hurt really badly,’ he continued.
‘We absolutely stop it. You can’t have it. It’s a man playing in the game.’
Faulkner then hopped in and pressed Trump further on the topic.
The Fox News host asked, “What can be done to prevent this? Do you approach sports organizations or the Olympic Committee?
‘You just ban it. The president bans it, you just don’t let it happen,’ Trump quickly responded.
The crowd of women erupted in praise for the ex-president’s policy proposal.
On the same day, Kamala Harris, his previous rival as Vice President, shared a differing viewpoint during an interview.
Bret Baier, a host on Fox News, questioned if Kamala Harris endorses the use of public funds for gender reassignment surgeries for transgender inmates and undocumented immigrants, during their much awaited conversation.
In 2019, Harris stated, “Every transgender inmate within our correctional facilities should be granted access.” This statement has been reworked by the Trump campaign for a campaign ad, which is critical of the Democrat.
Baier asked her if she still holds the same beliefs.
It seems you’re still advocating for the use of taxpayer funds to assist incarcerated individuals and undocumented immigrants, specifically with their gender transitions?” – This question maintains the original meaning while using simpler and more natural language.
Harris responded by not expressing her personal views but stating, “I intend to abide by the law, a law which Donald Trump also adhered to.
You likely know this already, but during Donald Trump’s presidency, these surgical procedures were provided on a medical need basis to individuals within the federal prison system as part of a publicly available report,” she further explained.
She was referring to a rule that had been established during the Trump presidency, prior to her and President Biden taking office.
The policy allows incarcerated transgender people to receive gender-affirming medical care if it’s required based on an individuals needs.
