Batman’s absence during The Penguin explained by Matt Reeves
As a die-hard fan who has followed the Batman saga since its inception, I must say that the latest spin-off show, The Penguin, has certainly kept me on my toes! While it was a bit disappointing not to see Robert Pattinson’s Batman in action throughout the series, Matt Reeves’ explanation behind his absence made perfect sense.
The Penguin spoilers follow.
In simpler terms, the final episode of “The Penguin” spin-off series based on Batman has hinted at the character’s comeback as the iconic Bat-Signal shone over the city of Gotham.
On the other hand, numerous fans found themselves puzzled about the absence of the renowned DC vigilante during the entire series.
In a conversation with Digital Spy, Matt Reeves, the executive producer of the HBO crime series, sheds light on the climactic moments of ‘The Penguin’s’ final episode and explains the reasoning behind Batman’s absence during these events.
As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled to share that the mastermind behind 2022’s The Batman, none other than Reeves himself, has shed light on the fact that the storyline of The Penguin unfolds right after the events depicted in the movie.
During this period, the city was experiencing significant unrest, as Reeves put it, it had just come a week after the incident. The city is largely in distress, making it difficult for law enforcement to maintain order since they can’t be present everywhere due to the widespread chaos. This is an extremely perilous time.

It appears that Oz Cobb has managed to avoid repercussions at this time, as Batman focuses on handling the aftermath caused by Riddler’s bombing scheme.
Yet, with his recent rise to power as the leader of Gotham’s criminal empire following Sofia Falcone’s downfall, it won’t take long for the Dark Knight to track him down.
Regarding the upcoming sequel, “The Batman: Part II“, director Reeves hinted that the title character will face a demanding new era, expressing that it’s extremely difficult for him to maintain his role as Batman.
Yet, it wasn’t just the anticipated reappearance of Robert Pattinson as Batman that was hinted at in the final episode of The Penguin; there were other intriguing elements revealed as well.
Toward the end of the season, there were signs suggesting that Zoe Kravitz might reappear as Catwoman (Selina Kyle) in future episodes or seasons.
Locked up once more in Arkham State Hospital, Sofia received a letter from her half-sister Selina.
In the upcoming movie, due for release in October 2026, it remains to be seen whether Catwoman will side with or against Batman. The audience must exercise their patience to uncover this mystery.
The Penguin airs on Max in the US, and NOW and Sky Atlantic in the UK.
