Okay, I’ll be real – I’m a total single-player Elder Scrolls fan, and ESO just hasn’t clicked for me yet. I’ve tried it a couple of times when it’s been free, but the whole MMO thing always feels overwhelming. But I’m starting to wonder if the new stuff they’re adding might actually change that. I’ve really gotten into Fallout 76 over the last few years, and I’m hoping ESO can finally grab me the same way. If the naval combat and underwater exploration they just showed off are as fun as they sound, then yeah, I think it might actually happen!
The Elder Scrolls Online – 2026 Seasons Direct
ZeniMax revealed plans for a major expansion to The Elder Scrolls Online last night, marking the start of a new seasonal content rollout. Called High Seas of Tamriel, this update, expected sometime in 2026, will introduce naval combat and underwater exploration. While details are currently limited – with upcoming content themed around the Thieves Guild and Sheogorath taking center stage for now – a brief preview showed exciting possibilities, including ship battles and underwater adventures, hinting at plenty of fun and memorable moments.
ZeniMax is starting with a special event called “Season Zero” on April 2nd, before launching bigger updates. This event introduces The Night Market, a trading post located in the unique Daedric realm of Fargrave. It’s a temporary area where players can complete puzzles, fight bosses, and participate in races to earn rewards for one of three local factions: the powerful, the wealthy, and the less reputable. The Night Market is planned to be available for seven weeks, but could return or become a permanent feature if popular. While exploring sounds interesting, I’m not thrilled about the possibility of repetitive, competitive tasks being everywhere.
The Thieves Guild and Sheogorath questlines, which I previously discussed, will be released as part of what’s officially season one, but is actually season two. Beyond some updates to the Glenumbra area, it feels like the development team is playing it safe with familiar Elder Scrolls content, especially considering the changes at Microsoft in 2025. While executive producer Susan Kath assured our Julian that the shift to seasons wasn’t due to layoffs or canceled projects, these quests feel predictable. Similar to knowing a certain song will be played at a concert, they’ll likely be enjoyable, but the promise of “just more Sheogorath” doesn’t feel particularly exciting, and I’d probably prefer to replay the Shivering Isles expansion instead. On the bright side, the new Thieves Guild quests introduce fun features like hiding in flowerpots and stunning guards.
ZeniMax has hinted at a return to Skyrim in early 2027. While they haven’t specified the location, the new area will be a dynamically snowy “Excursion Zone,” suggesting Winterhold or The Pale are likely candidates, with Whiterun’s tundra also a possibility. It’s understandable people are making jokes about revisiting Skyrim, but seeing Winterhold before its destruction could offer a fresh experience. This reveal also highlights that after over a decade, The Elder Scrolls Online is starting to look for new content within the existing world of Tamriel and Oblivion, rather than venturing into entirely new realms.
Will I play it when it comes out? Probably! The Elder Scrolls 6 isn’t expected for a long time, so I’ll almost certainly give it a try eventually.
