Warren Spector Says That, if Made Today, Deus Ex Would Be Seen as a Documentary
As a longtime fan of the Deus Ex series, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and awe when I hear Warren Spector‘s recent comments about the original game. It’s fascinating to think that if Deus Ex were released today, it might be perceived as a documentary rather than a video game. The parallels between the themes of the game and real-world events back then are simply uncanny.
In contemporary terms, Warren Spector, the brain behind Deus Ex, shared his thoughts on the game’s initial release in 2000 for PC, suggesting that if it debuted now, it might be viewed as a documentary due to its deep exploration of societal and political themes.
In an interview with PC Gamer, Spector discussed the game’s central ideas and how they have continued to resonate since its initial launch.
He stated that, given the current context, a new version of Deus Ex might be seen more like a documentary than a work of fiction. Back then, it was possible to view the original game from 2000 as an engaging fantasy.
He spoke about the issues that were resonant back then:
As the year 2000 approached, artificial intelligence was gaining traction, conspiracy theories were rampant, terrorism was escalating, and bio-engineering was just beginning. Techno-augmentation was also under development. All these topics were prevalent in the cultural zeitgeist, making it a natural choice to create a game based on them.
Additionally, Spector discussed the move made by Embracer Group to terminate the development of the Deus Ex project that Eidos-Montréal had been handling.
“I really have no idea why Embracer would abandon the Deus Ex franchise, at least for now,” he said. “From my perspective, the gameplay approach is still relevant, but the world and situation needs some updating.”
The last game in the Deus Ex series was Mankind Divided. Check out our review of that here.
