BBC’s Wolf Hall boss explains cast replacements as new series starts

As a seasoned gamer of historical dramas, I must confess, the recent changes in the cast of “Wolf Hall: The Mirror and The Light” have left me slightly bewildered, much like the political intrigues of Tudor England itself!

Peter Kosminsky, the executive producer of Wolf Hall, shares his thoughts about the new cast members after the debut of season 2.

The 2015 first season of BBC Two’s historical drama, “Wolf Hall,” which centers around the ascent to power of Thomas Cromwell and stars Damian Lewis and Mark Rylance, premiered.

In chapter two, known as “The Mirror and The Light,” several notable actors such as Lewis, Rylance, and Claire Foy have reappeared in the critically acclaimed series. However, due to the passing of Bernard Hill who originally played the Duke of Norfolk, and scheduling issues with Marvel’s Tom Holland, certain characters had to be recast.

In an interview, Kominsky explained that due to several factors, adjustments were made in our cast. Regrettably, Bernard Hill passed away just before production began, which meant he couldn’t reprise his role as the Duke of Norfolk. (Source: OK! magazine)

In the latest adaptation, Timothy Spall takes on the role previously held by another actor. Alan Kominsky remarks, “I believe the character of the Duke of Norfolk has changed in this new novel. I feel Timothy’s portrayal perfectly suits the updated version.

In my gaming world, I used to embody the role of Gregory, Cromwell’s son, in the initial series. However, it seems like the Marvel Cinematic Universe has swapped out Tom Holland with Charlie Rowe for this upcoming season instead.

In addition, Kominsky clarified some modifications from the initial release, revealing that there were expanded opportunities for individuals of color.

In the new series, we have incorporated more characters of diverse ethnicities, which was not present in the initial one. I’m thrilled that we managed to achieve this.

In our pursuit, we aimed to secure the finest actors who were open for the production. We scrutinized every potential candidate, and ultimately selected the most talented individuals from those who tried out for the parts.

In our series, it’s clear that Damian Lewis and Henry VIII are not doppelgängers, as Damian has a distinct appearance from the historical figure. Similarly, Jonathan Pryce does not closely resemble Cardinal Wolsey.

Wolf Hall: The Mirror and The Light airs on Sundays on BBC One at 9pm.
