James Norton says he might have ‘a family and a relationship’ next year as he discusses feeling broody and admits split from ex-fiancée Imogen Poots was not his decision

Having followed his career since his early days on screen, it is heartening to see him contemplating the next significant chapter of his life – settling down and starting a family.

39-year-old actor parted ways with his former fiancee, Imogen Poots, who is 35 years old, prior to Christmas. The news of their separation was made public in February.
Even though James is currently unmarried, it seems he’s contemplating the idea of establishing a family in the future, acknowledging that modern times have alleviated some of the traditional pressure on men to hastily start a family.
In conversation with The Sunday Times, he expressed: “I enjoy spending time with children as many of my friends are parents. However, my schedule has been extremely busy lately, and introducing a child into such a hectic lifestyle wouldn’t have been fair.
As a fervent admirer, I must acknowledge the undeniable advantage, the subtle bias in favor of men, that time seems to slow down for them. The luxury of delaying parenthood is one I cherish, and it brings me immense contentment with my current life trajectory. Truly, I am brimming with excitement over the paths I’ve chosen.
James also admitted his recent break-up with Imogen was not his decision.
He expressed: ‘Growing older can be tough if you’re worrying about past decisions, but I don’t harbor regret. In fact, some of the recent choices weren’t mine to make, yet I don’t feel resentful. Perhaps next year I’ll have a family and a relationship.’
It emerged that James’s ex Imogen tried to keep their heartbreaking split a secret.
Although they separated towards the end of last year, the duo opted to maintain privacy about their split, as a source near them disclosed to TopMob: “For some unknown reasons, Imogen preferred to keep it secret from others.
The carefree actress earlier expressed that she wasn’t prepared to lessen her pace, as she desired to explore different parts of the globe.
On the contrary, James has always been candid regarding his aspirations for starting a family. He confessed three years back that he was experiencing a strong desire to have children, which he likened to his “broody barometer activating”.
Imogen divided her days between New York and London. However, she used to assert that she had never experienced anything disintegrating because of the distance.
In an interview with The Evening Standard in 2020, she shared that her work has always been her haven: ‘It’s been the only constant in my life. I find solace in work because it’s familiar to me, as I’ve spent my entire life packing up and moving forward.’
The innate restlessness within you holds an undeniable charm, yet it seems I’m expected to settle down, perhaps even cultivating a farm or similar ventures. However, I am not prepared for such a transition just yet. Instead, I long to continue my journey of discovery and exploration around the world.
Earlier, James expressed that the movie “Nowhere Special” from 2020, where he portrayed a dying father of a three-year-old boy, sparked his ambition to become a parent.
In 2021, he shared with The Guardian that he’s in his mid-30s, and for quite some time, he has desired to start a family. His sister already has children, which seems to have triggered an urge in him, as if a ‘broody barometer’ within him is activating.
Last year, during an interview to publicize the end of Happy Valley, James expressed that his active acting career has its price: ‘We seldom get to spend time together due to our busy schedules, but we’re ready to bear this cost for the privilege of having someone in your life who truly understands you, who is understanding, and who will sacrifice their Sunday to do a tedious self-recording.’
According to a source, James and Imogen’s hectic work schedules have posed challenges in meeting each other, which is said to be a factor contributing to their separation, as reported by The Sun.

Their romantic journey started in December 2017, following their encounter while watching the play Belleville at the Donmar Warehouse.
In the year 2020, Imogen shifted residence to James’s apartment in London. Subsequently, they established their shared home together. Following a relationship that spanned over five years, they became engaged in February 2022.
Imogen was last seen with James at Wimbledon in July last year.
