Marvel may be making the Disney Plus show we have all been waiting for
As a child of the 90s, my heart skipped a beat when I heard the rumors about a revival of “Spider-Man: The Animated Series”. That show was a staple of my Saturday mornings, and the thought of seeing Peter Parker swinging across New York City once more is nothing short of exhilarating.
Since Marvel Studios entered television production through Disney Plus streaming service, fans have been brainstorming potential characters for solo TV series. So far, we’ve witnessed Wanda Maximoff, Vision, Loki, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight, She-Hulk, Echo, and Agatha Harkness take center stage in their individual tales. Yet, there are more to come, and fans eagerly await who the Marvel Cinematic Universe will shine a light on next.
Not only did the X-Men shine on the big screen, but they also captured attention on television screens too. Although it wasn’t part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the ’90s animated series, X-Men ’97, was eagerly awaited by fans – being one of Marvel Studios’ most highly anticipated productions under their Marvel Animation label. This 10-episode show served as a reboot of the original X-Men: The Animated Series and garnered significant acclaim, receiving praise from both fans and critics (with an Emmy nomination) and even securing a renewal for a second season.
For many Marvel enthusiasts, seeing the X-Men return to animation has been a long-awaited dream, a moment they’ve eagerly anticipated for years. However, it seems Marvel Studios may have other classic animated series in mind for revival as well. It’s even possible that these potential reboots could exist within the same animated universe.
Spider-Man: The Animated Series revival discussed at Marvel Studios
Based on reports from industry expert Daniel Richtman, there are talks at Marvel Studios about potentially bringing back “Spider-Man: The Animated Series.” This news follows the impressive performance of “X-Men ’97,” an animated series revival on Disney Plus that was modeled after the classic “X-Men: The Animated Series.” Fans have long been anticipating such a development.
During the duration of X-Men ’97, the anticipation and aspirations for a comeback grew at an incredible pace, not merely due to the series’ own merit. An episode even offered a glimpse into Spider-Man, while another included a brief appearance by Peter Parker along with Mary Jane Watson, his cherished partner. This provided us with a sense of how Spidey and MJ might appear in the redesigned format for Disney Plus, should Marvel decide to resurrect the show.
From 1994 to 1998, Spider-Man: The Animated Series aired over five seasons and produced a total of 65 episodes. This show had a connection to X-Men: The Animated Series, often crossing paths with it, such as the confrontation between Spider-Man (Spidey) and Wolverine that eventually led to a partnership. Just like X-Men, this series is often hailed as one of the best cartoons ever produced, especially in terms of superhero representation. For many ’90s kids, it was the ultimate portrayal of Spider-Man. Much like X-Men, its opening theme song is still considered among the greatest intro themes.
In some instances, the X-Men characters would acknowledge Spider-Man and other heroes during significant global events, much to the delight of fans. This could imply that the series’ continued interaction might set the stage for Spider-Man’s permanent comeback, potentially leading to a standalone show.
Fans have been advocating for a standalone Spider-Man series titled “Spider-Man ’98” since his appearance in “X-Men ’97”. This is reasonable, given that the original series ended on a suspenseful cliffhanger and it’s been quite some time. As both shows share the same universe, it seems feasible to bring this idea to life.
If the studio decides to continue featuring Spider-Man in more city adventures, it likely won’t happen soon because a new Marvel Animation series starring Spider-Man is due out soon on Disney Plus. Starting next January, you can catch Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, which takes place alongside the MCU and highlights some of Peter Parker’s early escapades as Spidey.
More Spidey equals a better outcome; let’s keep our fingers crossed for a future where Spider-Man ’98 becomes reality.
