Sweetpea episode 5 ramps up the story in a shocking way (Review)

As a gamer with a penchant for psychological thrillers and a soft spot for flawed protagonists, I must say that Sweetpea episode 5 was quite the rollercoaster ride. The writers certainly didn’t shy away from getting messy, which I appreciate as a viewer who craves realism in their storytelling.

As a devoted fan, I must say that the fifth episode of Sweetpea, titled “Someone’s Been a Naughty Girl,” surpassed last week’s installment in my eyes. With only one more episode left this season on Starz, it was only natural for things to intensify, and boy, did they! Here we go with our spoiler-filled review.

Sweetpea episode 5 ramps up the story in a shocking way (Review)

In a subtle yet impactful manner, the show accurately depicts the harsh realities of being held captive within one’s own home for extended periods. For instance, Rhiannon’s character is shown having to dispose of and clean a used bucket that Julia, the kidnapped individual, needs due to her confinement. It’s not a pleasant situation, but it underscores the grim truth of abduction. What’s interesting about this portrayal is how it sheds light on often-overlooked details, such as personal hygiene and basic survival needs, making the story feel more authentic.

If things couldn’t possibly be more challenging for Julia, she also finds herself in an unpleasant predicament involving her period. Yet, Rhiannon displays kindness by assisting her and helping her clean up. It’s quite fascinating to observe how, despite Julia’s apprehension towards Rhiannon, it’s the traumatic history with Marcus that enables her to manage the situation remarkably well. Frankly, I would not remain as composed as she does if I were in her shoes.

Rhiannon and I learn the reason behind Julia’s cruel behavior towards her in high school. It turns out that Julia may have lacked self-confidence, potentially due to growing up in an environment lacking love, as suggested by her remarks. Consequently, hurting others like Rhiannon provided a temporary relief for Julia. Unfortunately, Rhiannon was an easy victim for Julia’s mistreatment. While it might not be the extensive explanation Rhiannon hoped for, this is essentially the whole story.

Julia expresses remorse, admitting she feels regretful. I believe her sincerity is valid, but her rudeness towards Rhiannon persisted even into adulthood. This could be a result of the turmoil she’s experiencing due to her relationship with Marcus. Nevertheless, Julia’s actions, past and present, are unjustified. However, one crucial point Julia managed to convey to Rhiannon is that she has chosen the path of murder, possibly even enjoying it. This is something Rhiannon struggles to acknowledge within herself. Yet, I find myself aligning with Julia’s perspective on this matter.

Jeff exhibits an unnecessary rudeness towards others, particularly toward Rhiannon who is trying to advance her career at the newspaper. It’s puzzling why he chooses to behave so unkindly, especially before Marcus exposed Rhiannon’s deceit. Incredibly, even when Jeff met his untimely end by a truck, struck in such a tragic manner, it still took me aback.

As Rhiannon was poised to stab Marcus, I found myself pondering how she could possibly escape this predicament. In a sense, she’s managed to carry out several murders without being caught, which is quite fortunate for her. However, it’s unfortunate that Jeff met such a gruesome end. It seems Marcus may be the next victim in this tragic series of events.

I’ve got to admit, Rhiannon was cunning when she set that trap for me, making it look like I was the one responsible for everything, even the murders. It was a clever move that allowed her and Julia to escape from their mess. But little did they know, Marcus was more twisted than anyone suspected. He was so consumed by his jealousy, control, and manipulation that he couldn’t be reasoned with.

In my opinion, Detective Marina seems intriguing and shares some characteristics with Rhiannon. She embodies what our main character might be like: continuing to act independently while searching for answers, relying on her intuition, and striving to earn the respect of her peers and superiors, but not in a harmful or destructive manner. Marina appears to be following Rhiannon’s trail. Will she manage to capture her in the final episode? If so, could it be that she might choose to let her go, given their similarities?

In this fifth installment of Sweetpea, the narrative picked up pace, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats as Marina uncovers incriminating evidence, Rhiannon narrowly escapes detection, and Julia and Rhiannon strategize to ensnare Marcus. This episode was far more captivating than the previous one and effectively lays the groundwork for the climactic finale next week. Episode rating: B.
