Cult classic Christmas slasher film getting a reimagining set for late 2025

As a seasoned gamer and horror movie enthusiast who has weathered countless nights of fear with a controller in one hand and popcorn in the other, I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of excitement upon hearing the news that Cineverse is revisiting the classic Christmas slasher film, “Silent Night, Deadly Night.” Having recently survived the blood-curdling terror of “Terrifier 3,” I can attest to their knack for delivering chilling independent horror films that leave audiences begging for more.

Today’s entertainment news from Deadline brings some festive updates! The production company Cineverse is planning to revisit the classic Christmas slasher film, “Silent Night, Deadly Night.” Notably, Cineverse has previously distributed “Terrifier 3,” another horror movie set during Christmas that was released in October and proved successful at the box office.

Currently, the entertainment firm now owns worldwide rights for a modern take on the 1984 classic film directed by Charles E. Sellier Jr. Titled Silent Night, Deadly Night, the narrative revolves around Billy Chapman, a man scarred by his past. The story unfolds as he matures, donning a Santa Claus costume and embarking on a murderous rampage, triggered by a traumatic childhood experience where he witnessed a man in Santa attire killing his parents. This tragic event led to Billy’s admission into an abusive orphanage, exacerbating his mental deterioration and eventual transformation into a cold-blooded killer.

Released in the early ’80s, the film stirred much debate due to its grisly plot featuring a lethal Santa Claus as the main character, much like the Cineverse film “Terrifier 3”. However, this didn’t deter it from succeeding at the box office or inspiring several follow-ups. The most recent iteration, a remake, came out in 2012 and starred Malcolm McDowell and Jaime King.

By the American Film Market deadline, the fresh take on “Wrong Turn” movie is set to premiere, with a planned theater release towards the end of 2025. Directing and penning this new version will be Mike P. Nelson, the original director, while Scott Schneid and Dennis Whitehead reprise their roles as executive producers. The production for this project has not commenced yet but is expected to start soon in order to meet its targeted release date during the upcoming holiday season.

Speaking about the fresh perspective on “Silent Night, Deadly Night“, Brandon Hill, Director of Acquisitions at Cineverse, shares that he’s been a fan of the original film for quite some time. He explains that there remains an immense interest in independent horror films with a strong impact, and he believes this remake will attract audiences across various platforms, including cinemas, home entertainment, and streaming services.

If “Silent Night, Deadly Night” manages to be just as gruesome and entertaining as “Terrifier 3”, there’s no doubt in my mind that the distributor is bound for another box office success!
