Celebrating Finn Balor ten years since joining WWE
As a gamer with over two decades of wrestling fandom under my belt, I can confidently say that Finn Balor is not just a superstar, but a legendary figure in the world of professional wrestling. Ten years ago, when he debuted on NXT, I was captivated by his electrifying moveset and captivating charisma.
On October 23rd, it was a decade since Finn Balor embarked on his journey with WWE. He made his debut in the organization back in 2014, defeating Tyson Kidd via disqualification at WWE NXT. Over the years, he has become one of the most admired personalities not just within WWE, but across professional wrestling as a whole. Whether or not his tenure with the company is considered “successful” may be up for debate, but there’s no question that Finn Balor deserves continuous recognition and appreciation.
Many fans of Balor would argue that his tenure with the company was a triumph due to several factors. For instance, he’s been crowned as the NXT Champion twice, the WWE Intercontinental Champion twice, the WWE United States Champion once, and has been part of five separate tag team title reigns, one of which is his current partnership with JD McDonagh.
Additionally, it’s crucial to acknowledge that Balor was the inaugural WWE Universal Champion, debuting on the main roster and swiftly claiming a spot in the limelight of the main event. He transitioned from NXT and secured victories against two of WWE’s heavyweights at the time, Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins. Regrettably, the shoulder injury he sustained at SummerSlam 2016 not only stalled his progression back then but seems to have affected his momentum for nearly a decade.
Balor has won multiple titles throughout his career, yet he’s never truly felt like the top dog in WWE. Instead, it appears that the company often places him where Daniel Bryan used to be – a step below the true “A-lister.” Even when he’s involved in main event storylines, it’s typically to boost someone else’s profile. For instance, Karrion Kross, Gunther, Damian Priest, and even Liv Morgan or Rhea Ripley, to some extent, with the current trajectory of Judgment Day. It seems that the opportunity to establish Balor as the leader of the promotion may have already passed, but there’s still a chance we might see him take on that role one day.
At 43 years old, Balor continues to embody the qualities of a potential superstar. His exceptional ring skills allow for captivating matches with any opponent, and his striking appearance commands attention whether he’s playing the hero or the villain. Many consider his current stint in NXT to be his finest work within the company so far. Balor has resonated strongly with a significant number of professional wrestling fans, particularly due to his vocal support for the LGBTQ+ community. With the right chance from WWE, Balor could become another high-profile star they desire.
Despite a decade having passed since Finn Balor first joined WWE, he continues to be a valuable asset within their roster. Unfortunately, an accident limited his potential to become the main event star for WWE, and this remains evident today. However, his impressive achievements up until now, as well as his future potential, should not be overlooked. Finn Balor is a remarkable professional wrestler, and there’s optimism that he will eventually have a tenure where he shines brightly in the limelight once more.
