Are Buck and Tommy over for good? (Find out what happened on 911 season 8, episode 6)

As a devoted fan of 911, I must say that the sudden and abrupt end to Evan Buckley (Oliver Stark) and Tommy’s (Lou Ferrigno Jr.) relationship in season 8, episode 6 left me reeling like a fish out of water. It’s as if the writers took a sledgehammer to what had been a blossoming love story, giving us all a case of whiplash.

911’s sudden termination of Evan Buckley’s (Oliver Stark) relationship left us reeling, much like a sharp jolt. Is this really the end of the road for Buck and Tommy (Lou Ferrigno Jr.), or is this just the start of Buck’s quest to discover what he truly desires?

In the given episode, it transpired that Buck’s boyfriend had an unexpected past. They had been together for six months by then, but it seemed he was previously engaged to a woman named Abby Clark for two years. Fans might recall Abby as the first serious romantic interest Buck pursued during season 1 before he decided to end his string of casual relationships.

Pondering deeply, Buck found himself questioning how the kind-hearted man he knew now compared to the potentially cruel individual of yesteryears. During a conversation with Josh and Maddie, Josh clarified that expressing queerness differently for men like Tommy and himself meant concealing their true selves, living in disguise rather than openly.

Did 911 make a mistake breaking Buck and Tommy up in season 8, episode 6?

It’s been almost two decades since Tommy was part of the 118, and at that time, he wasn’t particularly admirable. However, he’s evolved significantly over the years, much of which we didn’t get to see on screen, but importantly, he’s proven to be a fantastic companion for Buck. In fact, after their conversation, Buck is confident about his feelings towards Tommy.

However, when Buck informs Tommy that he was the one who dated Abby after him and shares how both relationships had a profound impact on him, this seems to take Tommy by surprise, particularly when Buck proposes moving in together. Tommy admits that he went into their relationship aware it might not be permanent given his status as Buck’s first, but not his last.

This event was incredibly heartbreaking, affecting not just Buck, but also his devoted fans. The unexpected turn of events came as a real shock, given the previous episode’s suggestion that their bond was unwavering. We were aware that Tommy has struggled with feelings of isolation and lack of support, and he had even expressed to Buck how comforting it was to know someone had your back.

It’s quite surprising, and to be honest, Buck has never seemed to have much success in relationships. After eight long years, it would be wonderful to witness him finding a partner who reciprocates his feelings and is worth fighting for. Yet again, it seems like he was the one left out of the equation, with little control over his romantic choices.

Is it possible that we won’t encounter Tommy again? It’s uncertain at the moment, but based on post-episode discussions, it seems conclusive. However, in the world of television, anything can happen. It could very well be that these events are leading up to Buck realizing his feelings for Tommy and taking action to pursue the relationship he desires.

This tale seems to have required more delicate handling, and its sudden resolution leaves us puzzled, as if the pieces haven’t quite fallen into place yet. Are the events of 911 a blunder or are they setting up something unexpected? Regardless of how Buck’s narrative unfolds in the future, we fervently hope it receives the attention it deserves, for it feels like we’ve been caught off guard by a swarm of 20 million venomous bees.

Honorable Mentions:

  • Eddie went to confession and basically told the priest he was dating his dead wife. Or he killer her. Either way, at least the episode started off comedically before punching us in the gut.
  • After shaving his mustache, Eddie jammed to “Old Time Rock and Roll” Risky Business style before having beers with Buck, who came to his best friend for comfort after his break up. Neither of them said a word, but it showed how they could be there for each other even if one was finding joy in life and one was mourning a lost love.
  • Maddie hinted at wanting another baby, only for Chimney to be fearful considering her previous experience with post partum depression. Eventually, he came around and had figured out she was already pregnant. We’re so excited for Jee to get a brother or sister!

911 airs Thursdays on ABC at 8/7c. You can catch up on previous episodes on Hulu.
