As a seasoned gamer and avid Yellowjackets fan, I can’t help but feel a tinge of empathy for Ella Purnell. I mean, who among us hasn’t had that one game moment where we died in such a gruesome fashion that we couldn’t bear to watch the replay? And Ella, poor soul, was living it out in real life!
Excitedly, as I watch the Yellowjackets team tirelessly bring season 3 to life, I can’t help but reflect on my character’s journey in this gripping series. I’m referring to myself, Ella Purnell, who breathed life into teen Jackie Taylor during seasons 1 and parts of 2.
In the turbulent realm of Yellowjackets, where survival frequently hovers on the brink of the extraordinary, even the actors can be taken aback. Skilled actress Ella Purnell recently disclosed an unexpected revelation during a recent Fan Expo in Chicago: she has yet to witness the harrowing episode of the series in which her character meets a gruesome demise.
In case you remember, at the end of season 1, teenager Jackie tragically passes away following her expulsion from her team and spending a frigid night outdoors, ultimately losing her life due to extreme cold exposure, or hypothermia.
Despite the heart-wrenching scene of her death, it was a different event in the series that left fans and Purnell particularly disturbed. Specifically, I’m referring to episode 2 from season 2, titled “Edible Complex.” In this episode, the survivors were pushed to the brink and, due to extreme starvation, resorted to consuming Jackie’s remains. This is the point in the series that Purnell finds difficult to watch.
At the Fan Expo, a fan inquired about Purnell’s feelings towards her character being turned into a meal for the survivors. Purnell admitted that while she anticipated this development, it still gave her a slight unease. She further shared a secret with the crowd: she hasn’t yet watched the episode featuring cannibalism because she fears it could negatively impact her mental well-being. Consequently, she chooses not to watch it.
To put it simply, I get why she doesn’t fancy watching that particular episode or scene. It was quite intense for me as a spectator, and I suspect it would be even more so if I were the one acting in it.
Purnell gave an outstanding performance as Jackie Taylor, a teen character, and we’ll keep backing her up for her upcoming ventures such as “Fallout” season 2 and “The Scurry”. At present, she can be seen in the dark comedy miniseries titled “Sweetpea”.
