Luke Combs admits he got Tracy Chapman lyrics WRONG after Fast Car singer pointed out his error

As a dedicated follower of music and its intricacies, I find Luke Combs’ humility and honesty in his artistic journey truly refreshing. The fact that he admitted his mistake in recording the cover of Fast Car, even after being pointed out by Tracy Chapman herself, speaks volumes about his character. It’s not every day we see a star of his caliber own up to their errors so gracefully.

Luke Combs confessed that he erred during the recording process of his rendition of Fast Car, despite Tracy Chapman herself bringing the issue to light.

34-year-old country singer looks back on a time when he messed up a lyric and confessed that memory continues to trouble him even now, expressed in simpler terms.

The seven-time Grammy nominee expressed feelings of wanting to hide or seek solitude, following her polite correction of his error.

At a recent performance, he informed the crowd that following a chat with Chapman, he recognized his mistake in singing the lyric as: ‘We need to make a choice.’

Instead, he recorded: ‘Still gotta make a decision.’

He recalled: ‘That was the first time that I knew that I recorded the song incorrectly.

He shared with the crowd, “That’s what she had told me,” and he added, “When she said it, I felt so overwhelmed that I wished I could hide away.

He went on to say, “Fortunately, she handled it remarkably well.” Every time he sings the song from now on, and indeed forevermore, he’ll remember her cool demeanor. In essence, she remained unflappable.

Later on, Combs informed the audience that he would be performing Chapman’s authentic lyrics instead of his own recorded rendition.

He stated, “You’re familiar with it as, ‘I still need to decide,’ but he clarified that those aren’t exactly the right phrases.

He clarified, “It’s not merely the phrases themselves.” Instead, he continued, “The lyrics ‘We gotta make a decision’ are something I concocted within my mind. Therefore, this evening, I plan on performing that particular line.

‘Because Tracy Chapman told me to, and d*** it, I’m gonna do it.’

Previously, Combs took on Fast Car, initially sung by Chapman back in 1988, and his rendition swiftly dominated the country music chart peaks.

His cover was also nominated for a Grammy for best country solo performance.

This year at the 66th Grammy Awards, held in February, Chapman teamed up with Combs for a live performance of their shared song.

Before performing their duet, Chapman expressed her delight at seeing that people were still appreciating the song, even though Combs had covered it 30 years after she first introduced ‘Fast Car’.

‘I never expected to find myself on the country charts, but I’m honored to be there,’ she said.

‘I’m happy for Luke and his success and grateful that new fans have found and embraced Fast Car.’
