Paul Mescal reveals he became so muscular he felt his body ‘could inflict real damage’ after intense training sessions for Gladiator II
As a film enthusiast who has followed the career of Paul Mescal for quite some time now, I must say I am thoroughly impressed by his journey to stardom in the sequel of Russell Crowe’s iconic film, Gladiator. His transformation into a muscular warrior is nothing short of remarkable and speaks volumes about his commitment to his craft.
Paul Mescal disclosed that following his rigorous training regime for Gladiator II, he achieved such an impressive physique that he felt his body was capable of causing genuine harm.
In his own words, the 28-year-old actor shared that following training sessions with a personal trainer, horseback riding experiences, and martial arts lessons, he started experiencing a sense of strength and power.
As a die-hard enthusiast, I find myself utterly amazed by my own journey – a man with zero background in weightlifting or fitness training, I miraculously sculpted myself for the unforgettable role under Ridley Scott’s masterful direction.
He told The Sun: ‘You start feeling like your body can inflict damage, which is weird.
This environment alters your actions and routines, and it’s quite enjoyable, especially when it’s all pretend.
In a new role, the actor known for his part in the popular BBC series “Normal People” as Connell Waldron, takes on a character who is the son of the iconic Maximus, portrayed by Russell Crowe.
Even though Lucius (Paul) has been long deceased and laid to rest, it’s his spirit seeking vengeance and striving for freedom that we follow in the movie. He was captured into slavery and cruelly separated from his spouse and child by General Marcus (Pedro Pascal).
As a connoisseur of all things lifestyle-related, I find myself drawn to the captivating narrative that unfolds in Gladiator II. This enthralling sequel transports us several decades beyond the events of its predecessor, introducing us to a new protagonist: Lucius, the son of Lucilla from the original tale. Now residing in Numidia, a vibrant region nestled within the heart of northern Africa, Lucius embarks on his own journey of power and survival.
Although he was sent to Numidia as a child, the film follows Lucius’ return to Rome to reunite with his mother—and coming into conflict as he does so.
As a die-hard enthusiast, I can’t help but express my sheer elation over the long-awaited masterpiece that’s finally seen the light of day – a film two decades in the making! Critics are raving about it, and I wholeheartedly join their chorus of acclaim, particularly for Paul’s mesmerizing performance. The passion, dedication, and talent he brings to every scene is truly breathtaking!
However, it emerged on The Graham Norton Show that considerable effort went into preparing him for his portrayal of such a renowned character.
Regarding the regimen that sculpted him into a Roman-like figure, Paul shared with Graham: “I consumed plenty of chicken and lifted substantial weights. I had a coach who moved around me like a shark and commented, ‘There’s potential to shape.’
He visited the town each day, and I caught a glimpse of him every time. To be honest, I found it enjoyable, but he wasn’t exactly a fan of the town’s rigid regulations.
I followed all his instructions, but when it comes to drinking and smoking, I’ve set my boundaries; they are areas where I choose not to cross that line.
He expressed fear that they might take away all the enjoyable things, such as his drinking and smoking habits, as he put it.
I, being committed to my fitness journey, reached out to my trainer, Tim Blakeley, to incorporate alcohol consumption and smoking habits into my intense exercise regimen.
Paul remembered saying something along the lines of, ‘Give me a minute, Tim, I plan to continue with my drinking and smoking for a short while.’
‘He very kindly incorporated them, not into the workout routine, but just into my life.’
This year, videos showing Paul performing his Gladiator-style weightlifting routine became popular on TikTok, with one video lasting approximately 23 seconds showcasing him doing dumbbell shoulder exercises.
During an interview with Capital FM, Paul acknowledged that his impressive physique for the movie was largely due to a fantastic fitness coach. Additionally, he had a team of dietitians who advised him on what and when to eat.
In response to admirers checking out his latest physique, Paul commented: “I was fortunate enough to work with the top trainer globally, have access to a state-of-the-art studio, and receive backing from a dedicated production team throughout the process…
To convince your viewers that the character portrayed can endure severe violence consistently across the movie.
‘And you’re not going to survive that as someone whose running around Hackney.’
And it seems to have paid off as Paul grew more confident as filming went on.
As the project advanced, he eagerly yearned for the opportunity to perform more daring and impactful stunts.
He explained that he had to work very hard to persuade director Ridley to let him perform a dangerous jump on to a horse.
He says: ‘I’d rehearsed it for three, four, five weeks in the lead-up to it.
As we neared the time for filming, Ridley began feeling apprehensive about me dismounting the horse.
Consequently, only a week prior to the daring stunt being scheduled for filming, the renowned director spoke privately with Paul and firmly stated, “Absolutely not, you will not be performing those actions.
Paul expressed his disappointment at being denied the chance to participate, and after begging the esteemed director Ridley Scott, he eventually consented, but cautioned the actor that any mistakes could result in enormous financial losses for the film production.
Paul was told by Ridley that if he were to fall off a horse, he’d owe him two Bentleys. Fortunately for Paul, everything turned out fine in the end.
Later on, Paul disclosed that he hadn’t tried out for the sought-after part through traditional means, but rather secured the role following a brief 30-minute conversation with director Ridley Scott over Zoom.
Ridley is efficient with his time – contrary to my expectation that we’d have camera trials and auditions, our conversation spanned only a half-hour, during which we discussed the role for ten minutes, but also delved into topics like Gaelic football, his pet dog, and his spouse for another twenty minutes.
Initially, I expected there to be more opportunities, but then he contacted me a few weeks later to give me the role. It seems like he makes decisions based on his intuition both on and off the set, and I’m really happy things turned out this way.
