Cillian Murphy explains why rewatching Peaky Blinders is “heartbreaking”
As a devoted Peaky Blinders fan since its debut, I can’t help but feel a mix of nostalgia and anticipation as Cillian Murphy delves back into the world of Tommy Shelby ahead of the movie release. Having grown up with this gritty period drama, it feels like reuniting with an old friend – albeit one who’s been through quite the hardships!
Cillian Murphy shares that it feels both sweet and sad to watch Peaky Blinders again as they prepare for the release of the film, focusing on his character, Tommy Shelby.
The Academy Award-winning actor has been revisiting the BBC historical series, which was penned by Steven Knight, ever since he took up his role as its executive producer.
After I began working as a producer on ‘Peaky Blinders’, as Murphy shared with GQ, one feels compelled to do so. It seems almost inevitable. Watching it afterwards, knowing its quality, was a pleasant experience.
Though Murphy enjoys re-watching the show, he finds it emotionally difficult to do so following the death of Helen McCroury, the actress who portrayed Polly, in 2021.
“A little bit,” Murphy replied when asked if he is able to “distance [himself]” from the show.
“It was also quite heartbreaking, you know, because I was watching Helen McCrory, and we lost her.
However, you can step back and assess it, remarking, “Ah, yes, this is the ambiance we’re aiming for. This is the visual style, the silhouette, and the vibe we require. We need to amplify it for the film, clearly.
Arriving on Netflix, the “Peaky Blinders” film serves as a follow-up to the television series that unfolds during World War II. This motion picture was penned by Knight and is being directed by Tom Harper, who was also in charge of some episodes from the initial season of the show.
Joining Murphy once again, familiar faces such as Stephen Graham, Sophie Rundle, Ned Dennehy, Packy Lee, and Ian Peck will return to their characters from the series. They’ll be working alongside fresh additions to the cast, including Rebecca Ferguson and Barry Keoghan.
As a gaming enthusiast taking a break, I’ve stumbled upon some great news – you can catch the thrilling series “Peaky Blinders” on both BBC iPlayer and Netflix! However, if you were hoping for a cinematic experience with a movie version, unfortunately, there’s no release date set yet.
