Whew! The ninth episode of Outer Banks season 4, titled “The Storm,” was undeniably action-packed. Before diving into that final installment, let’s analyze the second-to-last episode of Outer Banks season 4, providing our review. SPOILERS AHEAD.

If things couldn’t be more troublesome for the Pogues, they find themselves on the run once more due to suspicions falling upon JJ for Hollis’ murder. As episode 8 revealed, this was a carefully orchestrated scheme by Groff, a real winner when it comes to fatherly duties. This man is just awful, and JJ begins to act up as a result. He’s wounded, and this is his response.

It wasn’t necessary for JJ to set off that firecracker at the police, his friends are justifiably angry about this incident. Previously, when he made reckless decisions without considering consequences, they were more lenient. However, this time, it was a serious mistake and they’ve had enough. Frankly, I can understand their anger since I also find JJ’s actions problematic. Yet, we do empathize with him due to his alcohol issue, which is truly unfortunate to witness.

It’s great to see him escaping that situation. He likely realized that following his father Luke’s path due to excessive drinking wasn’t an option for him. And thankfully, he managed to pull himself together. I’m so relieved! Incredibly, Kiara’s father stepped up in a way of assistance and support by shielding the police officer when he aimed at the Pogues after JJ set off the firecracker.

Is there more than a bit of shock in store? Absolutely for Rafe! I never anticipated him popping the question to Sofia. Yet, here we find ourselves. She’s incredibly kind, but maybe she can influence him positively, albeit subtly. To be fair, he is Rafe. And it’s noteworthy that when John B, Sarah, Pope, Cleo, JJ, and Kiara are caught, Shoupe apprehends them, Rafe steps up to the plate, embodying Ward in the process. It was quite evident here.

It’s no surprise that the group’s destination was Morocco, I had a feeling they would somehow slip away. However, I didn’t anticipate Shoupe allowing them to escape and Rafe stepping in to save the day. Sometimes events take unexpected turns. With the election looming, Shoupe is under immense pressure and must locate Groff, who turns out to be more of a swindler than we initially believed.

Regarding JJ, he reacted negatively and unsupportively when John B shared the news about their friends having a baby and asking JJ to be the godfather. He even taunted John B by suggesting that he wouldn’t make a good father, much like his own father and both of JJ’s. This clearly impacts John B, as he may harbor similar concerns about fatherhood given the show’s emphasis on complex family dynamics and particularly strained relationships with fathers. Moreover, John B is still dealing with the aftermath of his own father’s actions.

Despite the constant fighting, it becomes irrelevant as The Pogues encounter a monstrous storm. And things didn’t seem promising for them. In the ninth episode of season 4 on Outer Banks, they expertly created an intense sequence that resembled a cinematic experience instead of a typical television show. It was exceptionally well-executed! JJ, our beloved character, steps up and demonstrates his heroism by rescuing Sarah from drowning when she accidentally falls into the water.

It’s clear from the promotional photos that our entire team, including Rafe, manages to reach Morocco. However, just because they did, doesn’t mean I wasn’t filled with anxiety and my heart didn’t pound as we waited for news on Sarah and JJ’s safety. The tender embrace between Sarah and John B touched me deeply, and the friendship reunion between John B and JJ was heartwarming too. A fitting end to this episode: “Brothers for life.

I found myself thoroughly enjoying episode 9 of Outer Banks season 4, as it picked up the speed with its thrilling and action-packed sequences, a welcome change from episode 8. This installment featured the Pogues navigating through perilous situations, working together to escape danger, while also providing some meaningful character development for JJ. So, I’m eagerly anticipating how things will unfold in the finale! Episode rating: A.
