Doctor Who casts Indira Varma and Jason Watkins in new Torchwood spin-off
As a long-time Whovian who’s spent countless hours poring over Torchwood files and deciphering Time Lord riddles, I can hardly contain my excitement about Big Finish’s latest audio spin-off, Torchwood: Bad Connection! The prospect of Indira Varma reprising her role as Suzie Costello, the enigmatic character who once shook up our beloved team, is simply thrilling.
A new Doctor Who audio spin-off has been announced starring Indira Varma and Jason Watkins.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m looking forward to diving back into the world of Torchwood with Big Finish’s “Torchwood: Bad Connection.” In this new adventure, it’s me who’ll be stepping back into the shoes of Suzie Costello, a role I played in the series. An odd call I make from a phone box gets answered by a meticulous librarian named Emlyn Crook (Watkins).
She rings “to warn Emlyn of a dangerous creature stalking the streets”, though the synopsis teases whether he can trust her.
“He’ll have to if he wants to survive the night,” the synopsis adds.
Actress Varma, who portrayed The Duchess on “Doctor Who” recently, expressed: “I find Suzie appealing. She’s isolated and striving to connect with others, yet her harshness pushes people away. However, there’s depth in this role – it’s enjoyable to bring out both the bright and the shadowy aspects, revealing the complexity of a multi-layered character.
As a gamer, here’s my take on it: “Emlyn, being a librarian, is an intriguing character to play. His dynamic with Suzie is heartwarming, as she seems to be guiding him. They’re like two halves of the same whole, which might explain why their interactions are so engaging. And throughout this journey, they both show great courage.
Writer Aaron Lamont remarked, “The concept of ‘Bad Connection’ is arguably the most thought-provoking idea I’ve ever developed.” Initially, it was envisioned as “Fog in a phone booth,” but it might be more accurately characterized as “Alien in a phone booth.” A key scene involves Sigourney Weaver being confined within a closet with a terrifying monster peering at her. Essentially, that’s the gist of it!
Bad Connection is available now via CD or digital download.
In addition to the main cast, you’ll find actors like Ulrika Butt, Alex Hewitt, Arthur Hughes, Rhys Jennings, Bharti Patel, Rameet Rauli, and Matthew Woodyatt gracing the audio drama as well.
Torchwood’s “Bad Connection” can currently be purchased as a CD or downloaded digitally through Big Finish. Meanwhile, Doctor Who is broadcast on BBC One in the United Kingdom and streaming on Disney+ worldwide. For those in the UK, classic episodes of Doctor Who can be found on BBC iPlayer.
