Xbox 360 ‘App Password’ Issue is Preventing Some Players From Signing in to Xbox Live

As a seasoned gamer who’s been through the console wars since the days of Atari and NES, this Xbox 360 fiasco is leaving me with a sense of déjà vu. I remember the red ring of death, and now it seems we’re back to square one, or rather, square zero, as my Xbox Live account refuses to cooperate.

Some users of Xbox 360 are encountering trouble logging into Xbox Live on their consoles, which appears to be related to a problem with the ‘app password’ function. Upon testing it ourselves on an Xbox 360, we have found that this issue still exists as of now.

When Microsoft introduced two-factor authentication for account logins, the app password was added to your Xbox 360. However, since the old console couldn’t support it, a new system became necessary. The solution they came up with is app passwords. These work by signing into your Microsoft account on another device, which then generates a unique password for you – this serves as an alternative method of two-factor authentication.

So far, this system has functioned mostly as planned with minimal issues, but lately, it’s been causing either error code 8015D000 or 8015D086. As a result, you can no longer play any digital games on your Xbox 360, according to Video Games Chronicle (VGC). The Xbox Support Reddit is filled with discussions about this problem, and some users have reported it for over a month now. Currently, there are over 400 posts about it.

A user reported that when they reached out to Microsoft Support, they were informed that the company no longer addresses Xbox 360 problems. However, for some time, the problem appeared to be fixed, but it has resurfaced again. It seems that Microsoft has acknowledged this as a known issue and is currently working diligently to find a solution.
