Another casualty at Channel Nine as award-winning reporter abruptly departs network

As a devoted fan of Australian journalism and an ardent follower of Channel Nine, I must say, Amanda Paterson’s departure leaves me with a heavy heart. Her tenure was nothing short of extraordinary, a beacon of fearless reporting that shone brightly in the annals of Australian broadcasting.

After a long tenure, Amanda Paterson, formerly the news director at QTQ, has formally stepped down from her position at Channel Nine, signaling yet another significant departure at the broadcasting company.

A trustworthy source told Daily Mail Australia that Paterson indeed left, leaving a temporary gap in leadership until Nine finds a permanent successor.

Kate Donnison is stepping into the position temporarily, as Brendan Hockings, our QTQ EP, is away on his annual vacation and visit to the U.S.A. She’ll handle things until he gets back.

Hockings will then step into the position until a permanent recruitment decision is made.

2016 saw me (a humble journalist) proudly stepping into the role of Queensland News Director, a position I held dear and worked tirelessly to uphold. Now, as I bid farewell, my heart is filled with gratitude for the indelible mark I’ve left on Australian journalism – a legacy that stands tall among the pantheon of our industry’s greats.

At just 19 years old, Paterson started off her journalism career, quickly climbing up the ladder to gain recognition as an accomplished investigative journalist. She’s been nominated for three Walkley Awards and has won numerous Queensland Media Awards.

Through her bold reporting style, she uncovered intense investigations covering topics such as medical negligence, sports corruption, and a chilling murder confession caught on tape, ultimately resulting in the resolution of a long-standing cold case.

Throughout her term, Paterson played a crucial role in rejuvenating the Queensland office, mentoring a fresh crop of journalists, and winning over the confidence of the audience.

Additionally, she successfully steered her team towards continuous achievements in the highly competitive Australian media market, as reported by TVBlackbox.

Now, Channel Nine’s top management must grapple with the task of finding a worthy successor to fill the gap created by such a respected individual.

With staff preparing for more adjustments, Paterson’s exit is a substantial setback for the network, particularly at this crucial time of introspection and reorganization.

Paterson’s departure occurs during a tumultuous time at Channel Nine, triggered by the disclosure of an independent investigation revealing deep-seated problems within the station. These problems encompassed systemic misuse of power and position, instances of bullying, discrimination, and harassment, as well as sexual harassment.

The report’s conclusions have sparked increased examination into Nine’s internal environment and operational methods, causing some workers to express feelings of deception and disappointment.

Following the report, Fiona Dear, the lead of Nine’s TV news and current affairs division, emailed her team late in the day, expressing understanding for the hardships and difficulties they were experiencing.

In the email sent at 8:29 pm, a few days following the release of the report, [he/she] expressed his/her admiration for how well everyone has conducted the difficult story-telling last week and how professionally you’ve all handled yourselves since then.

Internal staff members have voiced their discontent about how the network has managed these disclosures, going so far as to criticize the management for exhibiting poor leadership abilities following the release of the report.

Employees haven’t failed to notice the coincidental timing of Dear’s late-night email and Darren Wick’s resignation letter earlier this year. This has added fuel to their growing dissatisfaction.
