Jeri Ryan being offered a different Star Trek show than legacy is bad news

As a long-time Star Trek enthusiast who’s been following this franchise since the days of The Original Series, I can’t help but feel a tinge of disappointment and a dash of frustration. For years, we’ve been eagerly anticipating a Star Trek: Legacy series, with Jeri Ryan reprising her iconic role as Seven of Nine and Ed Speleers returning as Jack Crusher. The prospect of these characters, along with new ones introduced in Picard, was incredibly exciting.

As a dedicated Star Trek fan, I’ve been eagerly awaiting any news about Star Trek: Legacy since the conclusion of Star Trek: Picard. This hypothetical series would have seen Jeri Ryan reprising her role as Seven of Nine, and it would have focused on the son of Jean-Luc Picard – Jack Crusher. If it had come to fruition, Ed Speleers, who played the character in Picard, would have taken on the role again.

Instead of being the main characters in the show, it’s probable that they would have had significant roles, as other new characters introduced in Picard, such as Geordi La Forge’s daughters, might also have been featured prominently. The production could have been overseen by Terry Matalas, the showrunner for Picard season three, and it may have continued directly from where Picard left off, with Jack Crusher encountering Q.

Enthusiasts have been eagerly anticipating this show for quite some time, but as more days go by, the chances of it actually happening seem slimmer and slimmer. Now, it appears so improbable that even the potential cast members are receiving offers for different Star Trek ventures, not just from other franchises.

According to Rachel Carrington’s recent comments, it was proposed for Ryan to return as Seven of Nine in a new Star Trek project. At Spacecon, Ryan herself disclosed that she was given an opportunity to star in a show centered around Seven of Nine, as reported by TrekMovie.com.

There has been talk. And there was an idea that was actually pitched to me after Picard ended, which was not the Legacy show that I know the fans are asking for, that I want to do. But it just wasn’t me… It didn’t feel like the right kind of thing.

Ryan has made it clear that she hasn’t given up on the project, expressing “It’s not impossible” about its continuation. However, she’s also receiving invitations to rejoin the franchise in projects other than the show that both she and fans are eager for. To me, this indicates that Paramount+ may not be planning a Legacy series.

It’s important to note that the filming for Picard’s last season wrapped up almost three years ago in March of 2022. Since then, there hasn’t been any news about further projects related to it. This is quite concerning, considering that Starfleet Academy already received a greenlight for its second season even before a trailer was released, let alone a full season.

It seems that the saying goes, “Given the opportunity, they’d do it.” If Paramount+ were inclined to produce Legacy, they undoubtedly would have. The main actors aren’t tied up with other Star Trek ventures at present, and they’ve had almost three years to give it the green light. Yet, they opted for Starfleet Academy instead.

The window for this show is quickly closing, if it isn’t already shut.
