The BBC faced a new controversy on Tuesday when a popular radio personality was unexpectedly fired.
Scott Mills, the presenter of Radio 2’s Breakfast Show, was taken off the air last Tuesday and has now lost his job due to issues with his behavior.
Claims against 53-year-old Mills reportedly stem from his time at Radio 1, around ten years ago. They are connected to a 2016 police inquiry into alleged serious sexual offenses involving a teenager.
BBC managers reportedly had no other option but to fire the DJ after receiving new information about his behavior.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been following this situation closely. What we’re learning now involves the same individual as the initial concerns, but the details don’t quite align with what the police investigated. Ultimately, after careful consideration, the BBC felt they had no choice but to let Mills go, as reported by the Daily Mirror.
The sudden exit of popular Radio 2 host Mills, who earned as much as £360,000 annually, has created significant disruption, according to sources at the Daily Mail. Colleagues were reportedly shocked, and station managers are urgently searching for someone to fill her position.
Sources suggest the abrupt dismissal, revealed in a brief public announcement, was among the final decisions made by Director General Tim Davie. He reportedly aimed to simplify things before his departure on Thursday.
Following his dismissal, DJ Mills is seeking legal counsel. He’s the most recent of several performers to be let go from the BBC, which has been facing numerous scandals.
This removal comes after news anchor Huw Edwards, and the MasterChef hosts Gregg Wallace and John Torode, were all let go in the past two years.
According to a source familiar with the situation, Mr. Davie, who stepped down after it was revealed that a Panorama program had used altered footage of a speech by former US President Donald Trump, was hoping for a final attempt to resolve the issue.
His departure creates a significant challenge for both current interim leader Rhodri Talfan Davies and incoming Director-General Matt Brittin. They’ll need to quickly find someone to fill Mills’ role, or the BBC could lose listeners.
The country’s most popular breakfast radio show now reaches 6.5 million listeners each week, a number that increased after listeners drifted away during the previous host, Zoe Ball’s, time on air.
Lorna Clarke, the BBC’s Director of Music, announced to staff on Tuesday that Scott Mills has departed from his role hosting the Breakfast Show and has left the BBC.
‘I know that this news will be sudden and unexpected and therefore must come as a shock.
Many of us have had the pleasure of working with Scott for years on various Radio 1, Radio 5 Live, Radio 2, and TV programmes. I wanted to let you know about his departure as soon as possible.
She admitted the news would likely surprise viewers and regular listeners of the breakfast show, and promised to share more details about the show’s future as soon as she could.
She continued, saying she understood people would have questions, but she wouldn’t be making any further comments at this time.
On Tuesday morning, the BBC announced that Scott Mills is no longer working for them, but they don’t discuss details about individual employees.
Mills hosted his last show on Tuesday, just after appearing on BBC’s Comic Relief on Friday. He ended the show by playfully telling listeners, ‘See you tomorrow.’
Just six days later, Mills was gone from the job.
‘People are walking around crying,’ said one BBC employee. ‘The BBC has taken this very seriously.’
Mills began hosting the BBC 2 Breakfast Show in January of last year, replacing Ms. Ball.
Mills became well-known while working at Radio 1, a station geared towards younger listeners. He started with the early morning show in 1998 and eventually moved to the afternoon drive time slot in 2004, taking over from Sara Cox.
The show, originally called The Scott Mills Show, was on air from 2004 to 2022. After that, Scott Mills moved to Radio 2 and took over Steve Wright’s afternoon show.
Now married to his partner of many years, Sam Vaughan, 36, Mills used to live a more carefree and pleasure-seeking life during his 24 years at BBC Radio 1.
According to a BBC source who spoke to the Mail, the issue concerns the environment at Radio 1, not Radio 2, in relation to the claims against Mills.
The BBC’s decision to let the DJ go clearly came as a surprise to everyone, and it was particularly poorly timed, as several members of the Radio 2 communications team were already on holiday for Easter.
Oh my gosh, can you BELIEVE it? Even Jeremy Vine himself – Jeremy VINE! – said he didn’t find out his coworker had left until practically the second before he started broadcasting yesterday. I mean, seriously? It’s just… shocking! How does something like that even HAPPEN? I’ve been following everything so closely, and even he was in the dark! It’s wild!
I was as surprised as anyone when I saw the news on the BBC website just seventeen minutes ago – that’s all the information I have, the same as what was in the bulletin. Apparently, Scott Mills has been let go due to allegations about his personal behavior, and that’s honestly everything I know at this point. It really came out of the blue!
BBC News correspondent Sima Kotecha said the newsroom reacted with shock when the announcement was made, describing audible gasps from staff.
‘This is mega news. We heard gasps in the newsroom when people realised that he had been sacked,’ she said.
It’s unclear why he lost his job, but it’s definitely bad news. The decision by management suggests there’s a serious underlying issue, especially considering he was a prominent figure at the BBC.
For twenty years at Radio 1, Mills, who was born in Southampton, battled with alcohol problems, anxiety, and depression.
His downward spiral was prompted by the sudden death of his boyfriend from a drug overdose in 2001.
He thanked his superiors at the BBC for their support, and even acknowledged he deserved to be fired because of his actions. Reflecting on a difficult time in 2012, he recalled being 26 when a close friend passed away, saying they had been inseparable and the experience was devastating.
I attended the Brit Awards. As soon as my Radio 1 show finished, the police were there to meet me. They delivered the news that he had passed away, and I was completely stunned.
He added: ‘[I’d] wake up at 2.30am, do the show, come home and go back to sleep.
I used to hit really low points. After work, I’d often unwind by drinking – sometimes two bottles of wine or a whole bottle of liquor – just zoning out in front of the TV. It was my way of coping, honestly. Looking back, I can see how bad it got; even I think I deserved to be let go! Thankfully, Radio 1 stuck by me. They understood what I was going through and why I was struggling, and it was a much-needed intervention, a real wake-up call that I desperately needed.
In recent years, Mills has found stability with husband Sam, who he met in 2016.
In 2024, the couple became well-known after competing on and winning the BBC’s reality show, Celebrity Race Across the World. Soon after filming wrapped, they got married in Barcelona.
Mills and Mr Vaughan appear together regularly on red carpets and at showbiz events.
The presenter has been chosen to host a new podcast called The Detour, which is related to the show Race Across the World.
He commentates on Eurovision for the BBC and impressively raised £1 million for Children in Need in 2022 by running on a treadmill for a full 24 hours.
I can’t believe it! First, Davie leaves the BBC, and now Mills is gone too! It’s total chaos! And get this – Davies, the Director of Nations, is taking over as the temporary boss. Seriously, what is happening over there?! It’s like everything I love about the BBC is falling apart, and I’m just trying to keep up with all the changes. I’m completely obsessed and need to know what’s going on!
After an 18-year career at Google, Brittin will become the new CEO on May 18th.
The BBC continues to face challenges following the Huw Edwards situation, which has been brought back into the spotlight by a recent Channel 5 drama featuring Martin Clunes. This drama focuses on the story of a convicted sex offender.
Edwards was temporarily removed from his position with full pay while the company investigated an issue. This happened before he resigned.
He was later given a six month suspended jail sentence for possessing child pornography.
