Hugh Bonneville forced to apologise as he faces backlash for making ‘flippant’ comment about being ‘contractually obligated’ to write children’s book
As a seasoned author and lifelong lover of literature, I find Hugh Bonneville‘s recent comments about his upcoming children’s book to be not only disheartening but also a reflection of a growing sense of entitlement among certain celebrities. Having penned numerous stories for young readers myself, I can attest to the blood, sweat, and tears that go into crafting a tale that resonates with its audience.
Hugh Bonneville has had to express regret following his lighthearted comments about having a contractual requirement to pen a children’s story.
The actor, best known for his roles in Downton Abbey and Paddington, told BBC Radio 2 that his decision to write a children’s book was simply fulfilling what he jokingly referred to as a celebrity ‘obligation.’
60-year-old Mr. Bonneville mentioned that anyone who appears on television nowadays is required to publish a children’s book as part of their contract. Therefore, he is meeting this requirement.
The father-of-one added that he was still in the early stages of the project and admitted: ‘A couple of illustrators have suggested ideas, and it helps the writing, because I don’t have any ideas.’
His remarks faced immediate criticism not only from well-known writers but also from a broader circle within the literary world, as they believed his statements undermined the effort and commitment needed when writing literature for young audiences.
One book awards judge commented, “It seems so gratifying to invest little effort into something that’s bound to thrive.
It’s quite unfair to all the diligent and imaginative writers and artists who put so much passion and effort into crafting stories for kids, yet hardly get noticed. BBC Radio 2, let’s aim for a higher standard.
In the realm of publishing, there was much discontent expressed due to an observed increase in presumed arrogance among celebrities who write books.
Tamsin Winter termed the remarks as ‘devastating to one’s spirit,’ further stating: ‘Many writers like ourselves pour our heart and soul into crafting books for young audiences, earning minimal recognition beyond the satisfaction of touching those who find solace in our narratives.’
SF Said, the acclaimed author of Varjak Paw and a recipient of the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize, expressed his concern by saying, “There is nothing more vital than children’s books!” or “In my opinion, there is no book category as crucial as children’s literature!
‘They’re the ones that make us readers in the first place, and they shape us in the deepest ways.
As a die-hard devotee, it’s heartbreaking to witness the casual dismissal that continues to surround the subjects we hold so dear.
In reaction to the criticism, Mr. Bonneville, author of the 2022 memoir “Playing Under the Piano”, expressed his apologies on X.
He wrote, “Kindly avoid attributing my offhand remark to Radio 2 as it was not intended as a criticism towards professional writers.
‘Trust me, I am putting my heart and soul into the project.’
In a recent interview, the star of Notting Hill commented that he aimed to poke fun at himself and the peculiarities of the world of writing.
‘I apologise,’ he said.
Regardless of his apology, numerous critics, such as children’s book author Ross Wellford, remained unconvinced.
‘I too am ‘contractually obliged’ to write a children’s book,’ Wellford wrote.
As a devoted devotee, I’m excited to share that I’ve landed a contractual agreement, often known as a book deal, with my publisher. This is my primary occupation and the source of great joy for me. Intriguing thoughts have been swirling in my mind – might I give it a go and venture into the realm of filmmaking, perhaps portraying Paddington’s dad?
Other authors also expressed their frustration.
Clare Swatman responded: ‘Well said. Absolutely infuriating and insulting.’
Whilst children’s author Dan Smith said: ‘What the hell? This is so depressing.’
Mr Bonneville directly replied to Swatman: ‘Please do listen to the interview.
I was playfully making fun of both my own quirks and the peculiarities of the publishing industry. I approach my writing with as much dedication and professionalism as any other established author does.
Carole Solazzo voiced her disappointment alongside others, expressing it thusly: “I’m deeply disappointed by Hugh Bonneville’s remarks. Such a regrettable behavior from yet another celebrity exploiting the situation.
Bonneville replied: “Hello Carole, I hope you might give the interview a listen someday and understand that I was joking about myself and the peculiar realm of publishing.
‘As with my first book, I take writing seriously and seek to do my best.’
