While HBO Max is known for its intense dramas and crime shows, “Somebody Somewhere” offers something completely different: a heartwarming comedy-drama set in Manhattan, Kansas. It’s not always cheerful, but the show’s positive energy makes it consistently uplifting.
Bridget Everett’s character, Sam Miller, faces a lot of challenges, but she perseveres with the help of her passion for music and her close friend, Joel. While many HBO shows have received perfect scores on Rotten Tomatoes, this one stands out as both incredibly relatable and surprisingly deep.
If you’re dealing with loss or a challenging life transition, the show Somebody Somewhere could be exactly what you need. It’s a genuinely moving and authentic series, a refreshing change from much of what’s on TV today. It’s arguably the best show currently available on HBO Max, and the lead actor hints that a film adaptation might be in the works.
What Is HBO’s Somebody Somewhere About?
If you loved the heartwarming, small-town charm and genuinely kind characters of Schitt’s Creek, you’ll likely enjoy Somebody Somewhere. However, while it fills a similar niche, it’s actually a show with a depth and appeal all its own.
The show follows the life of a woman after the loss of her sister to cancer. Drawing from the experiences of its star, Bridget Everett – who also writes and produces – and set in her hometown, Somebody Somewhere feels deeply authentic and moving.
A particularly heartwarming part of the show is the connection between Everett’s character, Sam Miller, and Joel, who is played by Everett’s close friend, Jeff Hiller. It’s truly special to see Sam and Joel’s genuine and open affection for each other.
Sam and Joel have a purely platonic friendship – there’s no romantic or sexual attraction between them, despite what the show sometimes implies. This kind of genuine connection is unusual for adult characters on television, and their shared love of spontaneous singing makes them even more likable.
Somebody Somewhere Ended Too Soon
Despite winning many awards and earning critical acclaim, HBO has unfortunately canceled Somebody Somewhere before it could finish its fourth season. This means fans may never see how Sam and Joel’s story concludes, which is especially disappointing considering how much the show meant to so many people.
Bridget Everett was deeply saddened when HBO cancelled her show, Somebody Somewhere, feeling like she was losing a part of herself. This reaction makes sense considering how much of the show’s story was based on her own life.
Despite everything, the show ended with a truly satisfying finale, co-written by the show’s creator. Like the rest of Somebody Somewhere, the final episode of season 3 focuses on the small, joyful moments in life, and brings Sam’s story to a lovely close – for now.
Bridget Everett Wants To Make A Somebody Somewhere Movie
During an appearance on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Bridget Everett said she’d be interested in making a movie based on her acclaimed TV series, Somebody Somewhere. She told Andy Cohen, “We would be open to a movie, I’d love to do a movie, and I think our fans would enjoy that too.”
She expressed disappointment about the show being cancelled, saying, “We felt like we still had more story to tell.” The show Somebody Somewhere received perfect scores from critics, which supports her feeling that it ended too soon.
Anyone who loves the fantastic HBO show Somebody Somewhere is hoping for a movie follow-up, now that Bridget Everett has said she’d be up for one. But even if a movie doesn’t happen, all three seasons currently available on HBO are definitely worth watching.
