Taylor Swift voting video goes viral after Kamala Harris endorsement - but it's not what you think

As a lifelong fan of Taylor Swift’s music and her journey as a trailblazing artist, I find myself deeply moved by her recent endorsement of Kamala Harris for President. Having grown up listening to Swift’s anthems about love, heartbreak, and self-empowerment, it’s inspiring to see her using her platform to promote political change.

A recently released video featuring Taylor Swift urging her followers to cast their votes on Election Day is gaining significant attention, with Kamala Harris and Donald Trump in a tight race for the U.S. presidency.

However, the video, initially circulated on platforms like X (previously Twitter) and TikTok on Tuesday, was first shared by the wealthy pop sensation, aged 34, back in November 2018, during the midterm elections.

In this context, Swift addressed ‘youth voters’ and motivated her supporters to demonstrate their voting action by sharing a picture accompanied by the hashtag #IHaveVoted.

In that old video, she emphasizes that merely desiring to vote isn’t sufficient; you need to actually cast your vote to bring about change.

As a devoted Swiftie, I too was deceived, thinking I had just received the latest political stance from Taylor Swift, a belief that even the renowned Newsweek seemed to share.

One grateful admirer tweeted, “Miss Swift, it appears your endorsement might have preserved democracy. Thank you so much!

Many individuals took it a step further by sharing photos of themselves with the ‘I Voted’ stickers on social media, hoping to catch Taylor Swift’s eye.

Originally posted by Taylor Swift on her Instagram Story back in 2018, the video was reshared on TikTok account @taylor_swift_videos yesterday. In less than a day, it gathered more than 400,000 views.

The post received even more attention when it was shared on X by the account Call To Activism, which has more than a million followers and is known for being an ardent supporter of Harris.

In September, Swift openly supported the Democratic candidate Harris, along with her running mate Tim Walz, in a detailed post on Instagram that has garnered over 11.4 million likes.

On Monday, I shared a heartfelt and crucial message with my devoted followers, urging everyone to exercise their right to vote on Tuesday, November 5.

This week, Harris didn’t show up at her high-profile election rally in Pennsylvania with many famous faces due to her prior commitment – attending a NFL game where her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, was playing in Missouri.

At Arrowhead Stadium, she witnessed the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while seated in a private box alongside Brittany, who is a well-known supporter of Donald Trump and is linked to Patrick Mahomes.

In September, Brittany openly showed her backing for Trump and JD Vance during the recent elections by liking several related posts on social media.

Back in September, I publicly endorsed the Democratic party, taking a stance against criticisms made by Vance about the U.S. being governed by childless women like myself. Instead, I lauded Kamala Harris as an exceptionally talented leader.

Additionally, she criticized the ex-president Trump last August for falsely suggesting her backing through a series of artificial intelligence images, which he presented as if they were genuine endorsements.

I swiftly shared my endorsement for Harris on Instagram, moments after her passionate debate with Trump during their presidential encounter.

Similar to many of us, I tuned into the debate tonight. If you haven’t yet, now would be an excellent opportunity to delve deeper into the issues being discussed and understand each candidate’s viewpoints on the matters that resonate most with you. As a voter, I prioritize staying well-informed about their policy proposals and visions for our nation.

‘Recently I was made aware that AI of ‘me’ falsely endorsing Donald Trump’s presidential run was posted to his site. It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation. It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter. The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth,’ she added.

She noted that ‘I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos. I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate @timwalz, who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades.’

‘I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice. Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make. I also want to say, especially to first time voters: Remember that in order to vote, you have to be registered! I also find it’s much easier to vote early. I’ll link where to register and find early voting dates and info in my story,’ she wrote.

Swift concluded her Instagram post with: ‘With love and hope, Taylor Swift Childless Cat Lady.’

In 2023, a picture of Swift with her cat named Benjamin Button was taken for TIME magazine. This image was later shared by Swift herself, showcasing her holding the feline.

The Trump campaign dismissed the endorsement swiftly, arguing that it merely underscores Swift as a member of the Democratic establishment.

Trump then took to Truth Social to declare his ‘HATE’ for the pop sensation.

Taylor Swift has previously voiced her support for a candidate. In the 2020 presidential election, she supported Joe Biden.

In a 2019 conversation with The Guardian, Taylor Swift expressed her backing for Hillary Clinton over Trump during the 2016 election and criticized Trump for viewing the presidency as an authoritarian rule.
