Coldplay's Chris Martin falls through trap door onstage during Melbourne concert

As a seasoned music enthusiast who has witnessed countless live performances, I must say that the recent escapades of Chris Martin and Olivia Rodrigo taking unplanned plunges during concerts are quite the spectacle! It’s not every day you see a superstar take a tumble through a trap door, reminding us all that even rockstars can have their own “oopsie daisies.

It was a wicked and wild wind, blew down the doors to let him in.

Perhaps the extraordinary size of the audience during Coldplay’s Melbourne concert on Sunday might have caused Chris Martin to accidentally stumble and fall through a trap door.

In videos shared on social media by concert attendees, the 47-year-old artist gestures towards various fan signs and banners, then retreats towards a trap door that was open. Beneath the Marvel Stadium stage, a team member stretches out his arms to break the musician’s fall.

The artist from ‘Viva la Vida’ commented casually, adjusting his microphone harness and reclaiming the stage, ‘That wasn’t part of the plan.’ He added, ‘That could have been a viral video moment.’

Beyond merely having “the nerves,” Martin assured his audience that he hadn’t sustained any injuries. Looking down from the stage door, Martin expressed gratitude towards the crew members who had assisted him, playfully saying, “You’re getting a bonus, you’re getting a bonus.

A representative for Martin did not reply immediately Tuesday to The Times’ request for comment.

The mishap comes less than a month after pop star Olivia Rodrigo fell through the stage while performing in Melbourne, albeit at a different arena.

At the last performance of her Guts tour at the Rod Laver Arena, Rodrigo leaped around onstage, acknowledging excited spectators, before suddenly falling through a hidden hatch. “I’m fine,” she assured everyone, immediately rising again, “What just happened?

The “Vampire” singer later poked fun at herself, posting a dramatic edit of the tumble on TikTok.

Following the completion of the Guts tour in late October, Rodrigo shared the story with Jimmy Fallon during a guest spot on his late-night talk show.

Rodrigo admitted it had been truly terrifying, but assured everyone she was fine. “In our line of work,” she added, “the show always has to continue. That’s just part of the entertainment business.

Currently, the Coldplay Music of the Spheres World Tour is ongoing. It started in March 2022 and will end with a 10-day stint at London’s Wembley Stadium in September 2025. Today, it carries on in Sydney.

The U.K. band set a new attendance record at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne during their four-night performance, surpassing the previous record held by AC/DC for 14 years. Over 227,000 people attended the shows, as announced on Sunday, according to Billboard. The earlier record was established with 181,495 attendees across three concerts in 2010.

On October 4, Coldplay launched their tenth studio album titled “Moon Music,” which marked the band’s tenth consecutive number one album on the U.K. Official Albums Chart. Additionally, during its first week, it sold an impressive 237,000 chart units, making it the highest-selling debut by a British act in three years.

Even though “Moon Music” has been successful, it’s one of Coldplay’s last productions, as the group intends to release only two more full-length albums before disbanding. Chris Martin shared this news with Zane Lowe during a recent interview on Apple Music.

Simplicity is key, and according to certain critics, even fewer elements would be better still,” he noted. “Maintaining a balance is crucial.
