Selena Gomez reveals health diagnosis in response to body shamers: ‘This makes me sick’
As a long-time admirer of Selena Gomez, I find her strength and resilience truly inspiring. Time and time again, she has shown the world that she is more than just a pretty face or a talented entertainer. She is a fighter, a survivor, and an advocate for mental and physical health.
Once more, Selena Gomez has silenced critics who shame her over her body on social media. In the process, she also disclosed another aspect of her health situation.
Actress and founder of Rare Beauty cosmetics, who stars in “The Only Murders in the Building,” recently addressed rumors about her weight on TikTok. She disclosed that she struggles with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. This revelation came shortly after she graced the red carpet for the premiere of her movie “Emilia Pérez” at the American French Film Festival in Hollywood last week.
At the October 29th gathering, the Emmy-nominated actress from “Wizards of Waverly Place,” Selena Gomez, was pictured in a tight, black dress. In a now-removed TikTok post, it was noticed that Gomez placed her hands on her abdomen, leading some to speculate she was concealing her body, as reported by TMZ. Previously addressing body shamers online, Gomez responded to the video with “This makes me sick.
32-year-old Gomez openly disclosed her struggle with Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), as evidenced by several posts on social media. She asserted, “It occasionally acts up. I don’t give a hoot about not appearing sickly. I don’t possess that physique. Case closed.
She added: “No I am NOT a victim. I’m just human.”
The Mayo Clinic says SIBO occurs when the small intestine experiences an “abnormal increase in the overall bacterial population,” particularly bacteria types that aren’t commonly found in that part of the body. SIBO, also known as blind loop syndrome, commonly occurs “when a circumstance — such as surgery or disease — slows the passage of food and waste products in the digestive tract.” The former Disney Channel child star revealed in 2017 that she had undergone a kidney transplant due to lupus nephritis, where the autoimmune disease lupus causes a person’s kidneys to fail.
Symptoms of SIBO include bloating, abdominal pain and nausea.
For some time now, Gomez has been open about her various health struggles, which encompass her fight against lupus as well as her encounters with bipolar disorder, anxiety, and depression. In the month of September, Gomez disclosed that her multiple health issues make it impossible for her to conceive a child naturally; instead, she may opt for surrogacy or adoption when she chooses to start a family.
She confided to Vanity Fair during their conversation, which was released two months back, that she needed some time to mourn it.
In February 2023, Gomez openly addressed her weight and body critics during a TikTok live session. She revealed that the medication she uses to control her lupus causes her to retain water. “I’m not a model, I’ll never be,” she stated at that time, while reminding her followers of their own beauty.
As a movie enthusiast, I simply wish to share that you’re not just stunning, but truly remarkable. There are moments when we might feel less than stellar, but I’d choose wellness and self-care over anything else. My medication is a crucial part of my journey towards health, and I wholeheartedly believe it plays an essential role in helping me.
