Author C.L. Clark is releasing an Arcane tie-in novel: Ambessa: Chosen of the Wolf

As a voracious reader who has traversed countless fantasy worlds and followed numerous characters through their trials and tribulations, I am genuinely thrilled about the upcoming release of “Ambessa: Chosen of the Wolf” by C.L. Clark. Given my extensive experience with the genre and a soft spot for strong female protagonists, I find Ambessa Merdada’s character to be particularly compelling.

This week later on, Netflix is set to debut the initial three episodes of season 2 for “Arcane”. We’ll finally uncover what happens to Vi, Jinx, and the cities of Piltover and Zaun. The previous season ended with a suspenseful cliffhanger, yet it was the deep character development that truly captivated us. Yes, this series is adapted from the “League of Legends” video game, but regardless of whether you’ve played the game or not, you’ll find yourself drawn in by the characters and their intriguing stories – all brought to life brilliantly in “Arcane’s” distinctive art style.

Besides Vi and Jinx, Arcane boasts a host of captivating characters. One such character is Ambessa Merdada, who made her entrance late in Season 1, ruling as the fierce queen of the Merdada clan and mother to Mel Medarda, an aristocrat from Noxus exiled to Piltover who’s striving for peace with Piltover. The bond between Mel and Ambessa is intricate, and the series skillfully delved into their complex relationship, even though they shared screen time for just two episodes.

In the upcoming second season of Arcane, we can expect to witness more of Ambessa. She traveled to Piltover with the intention of persuading the nobles to suppress any resistance to their rule; however, since her daughter Mel’s fate remains uncertain following the events of season 1, it seems highly probable that we will see Ambessa continuing to advocate for a forceful strategy in the future.

Ambessa, a character we’re eagerly anticipating, will be receiving plenty of attention in the upcoming months. Besides her appearance in “Arcane” season 2, she is also being introduced as a champion in “League of Legends” starting November 6, mere days before the show’s debut. To make things even more thrilling, next year will bring an extraordinary bonus: C.L. Clark, author of the fantasy series “The Magic of the Lost“, is releasing a novel tie-in focusing on Ambessa called “Ambessa: Chosen of the Wolf“. The publisher, Orbit, shared this exciting news last week via Twitter.

What is Ambessa: Chosen of the Wolf about?

Ambessa shone brightly among the characters in the first season of Arcane, making it exciting to learn she’ll receive such attention. While specifics about Ambessa: Chosen of the Wolf remain scarce, it seems this upcoming novel might delve into her journey to power, perhaps revealing a rift between her and Mel. Here’s a summary from Amazon:

Ambessa Medarda: The Unyielding Queen

Tie-in novels can sometimes be hit or miss; they may enhance a well-known series by enriching its backstory, or they might seem more like attempts to make money. However, Chosen of the Wolf appears to fall squarely into the former category. The trilogy by Clark, starting with The Unbroken, followed by The Faithless, and concluding next year with The Sovereign, follows two main characters in love who each grapple with their own broken family dynamics against a backdrop of escalating political turmoil and revolution. Ambessa, a shrewd older female warrior and the mother of Touraine, the lead character from The Unbroken, brings to mind Jagohtai. I have no doubt that Clark will excel in crafting such a complex character as Ambessa Merdada.

Beyond the point that Clark is an ardent lover of Arcane, it’s worth noting that I recall numerous tweets expressing admiration for the show during its initial season. So, the emergence of this collaborative project a few years later seems almost predestined. I’m eagerly anticipating their work on Ambessa: Chosen of the Wolf.

It seems as though the secret has been revealed! Clark posted on Twitter/X after the book announcement, “I can’t express how thrilling it’s been to breathe life into the most intriguing character from [Arcane]. If the fantastic music video featuring [Sheryl Lee Ralph] sparked your curiosity…prepare to have your questions answered.

The music video that Clark referred to is titled “Blood, Sweat & Tears,” sung by Sheryl Lee Ralph. It came out last week and appears to provide a glimpse into Ambessa’s past history.

In summary, it’s great news for fans of Arcane, League of Legends, and C.L. Clark’s books as the character Ambessa will continue in a new novel and within the game despite Arcane ending its run this month with its second and final season. There is a possibility that we might see more of her in a future League of Legends animated series, assuming she makes it through the season’s climactic events.

The book titled “Ambessa: Chosen of the Wolf” is now up for pre-purchase, and it will be made available starting February 18, 2025. Meanwhile, the second season of “Arcane” will debut its first three episodes on November 9, followed by additional episodes on November 16 and 23.
