The Dark Knight Writer’s 2-Part Sci-Fi Comic Book Series Keeps Getting Better

As a sci-fi fan, I’ve been consistently impressed with Krypton. It’s a two-part series originally based on a DC comic, and what’s really cool is that it was co-written by David S. Goyer – the same guy who helped write The Dark Knight with Christopher Nolan! It premiered eight years ago, and honestly, I think it’s even better now than it was when it first came out. Goyer got to build his own superhero world, and it’s really held up over time.

David Goyer has a long history of bringing comic books and sci-fi stories to life on screen. He’s been writing and creating for over three decades, with credits including the Blade movies, Christopher Nolan’s Batman films, and the Superman movies starring Henry Cavill. He’s also created shows like Constantine, Foundation, and The Sandman. But one show he made, while overlooked when it first aired, is actually even more impressive today.

David S. Goyer’s Krypton Has Aged Surprisingly Well

The series Krypton is set on Superman’s home planet, generations before he was born, and centers on his grandfather, Seg-El, and his efforts to save Krypton from turmoil and restore his family’s honor. While it wasn’t based on a specific Superman comic storyline, Syfy canceled the show after two seasons in 2019. Even though it was canceled, Krypton still holds up remarkably well today.

Even now, the visual effects in Krypton are impressive and stand up well against other science fiction shows. With its stylish sets and moody lighting, Krypton looks and feels like a modern cyberpunk series, similar to shows like Altered Carbon. The story of a world facing destruction and a rigged system further enhances that cyberpunk feel.

While Krypton is definitely a cyberpunk story, it’s also a large-scale space opera. With elements like time-traveling enemies, political maneuvering, and even power grabs within Krypton’s government, it strongly resembles other space operas like Foundation. Both cyberpunk and space opera are popular again now, which makes Krypton feel like it arrived just before its time – it could have been a huge hit if it had premiered a few years later.

If Krypton had premiered in 2024 instead of 2018, it likely would still be running. While the show didn’t get the attention it deserved at the time, many of its strengths – like its high production value, unique visuals, mix of genres, exciting action, and complex storyline – would be hugely popular with audiences today, especially on a streaming platform rather than on Syfy.

Krypton Was A Perfect Show For Comic Fans

The biggest draw of Krypton was its link to the DC Universe, especially Superman’s history, and it delivered on that promise. The show is packed with memorable DC characters. While Brainiac is the primary villain in season one, it also introduces younger versions of familiar faces like General Zod, Lobo, and Doomsday. Notably, Krypton features the only live-action portrayal of Adam Strange.

It’s exciting to see how much of the show Krypton is connecting with the new DC Universe. Characters like Brainiac, who will be the main villain in the upcoming Superman: Man of Tomorrow film, and Lobo, played by Jason Momoa in Supergirl, are proof of this. These developments make the villains and characters from Krypton feel especially relevant right now.

The show Krypton presented a surprisingly grim and brutal version of Superman’s home world, which actually connects well with the story of Kal-El’s parents in Superman 2025. Because Krypton included comic book details that later became standard in the DC Universe, the show feels increasingly important and relevant over time.
