Rhea Ripley's injury shines light on glaring lack of contenders on WWE Raw

As a long-time wrestling enthusiast who has seen the highs and lows of the WWE, I can’t help but feel a sense of disappointment when it comes to the current state of the women’s division on Monday Night Raw. The roster is brimming with talent – from Alba Fyre to Shayna Baszler – yet, it seems like they are stuck in a never-ending loop of underutilization.

Last week, the female division of Monday Night Raw in WWE was shaken by significant news: Rhea Ripley had to withdraw due to an orbital bone fracture and will be absent for some time. This is another injury that has affected her stint on the main roster. Currently, Liv Morgan holds both the WWE Women’s World Championship and the inaugural Women’s Crown Jewel Championship, but she lacks major opponents. This absence of significant competitors highlights a problematic aspect in how women are presented on the main show.

The women’s division in WWE is incredibly talented, making it tough not to admire them when you compare the rosters from SmackDown, Raw, and NXT. It’s hard to find fault with this impressive group, except perhaps for Nia Jax’s reign as champion. However, there’s growing unease about how these divisions are handled compared to the men’s, particularly on Monday Night Raw. Ripley’s injury has brought this issue into sharp focus.

In this lineup, you’ll find names such as Alba Fyre, IYO Sky, Lyra Valkyria, Shayna Baszler, and others. However, none of these talented women seem poised for championship contention at the moment. The women’s tag team division on Monday Night Raw is captivating, but it appears that only a select few teams are receiving regular matchups. There seems to be a lack of clarity regarding who might emerge as Morgan’s top challenger.

As a passionate WWE Raw fan, I’m excited about the upcoming storyline where Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez are aiming for Jade Cargill and Bianca Belair’s tag team titles in the November 4 edition. Given their past as two-time tag team champions, this move seems fitting to boost the division’s prominence on Raw, as even the current champion is eyeing those very same titles.

In the male category, there are numerous talents currently gathering steam, who not only pose title challenges but seem destined to become champions down the line. Names like Jey Uso, Bron Breakker, Seth Rollins, Bronson Reed, and Damian Priest stand out as likely future titleholders. Unfortunately, the female division lacks this development due to limited opportunities for storylines beyond the championship scene. This issue has been a topic of discussion among fans, yet remains unaddressed by WWE. WWE NXT offers a compelling demonstration of how the women’s division can be showcased effectively with various narratives unfolding both within and outside of title contention.

Due to Rhea Ripley’s unfortunate injury, she has been forced to take a break from action. Regrettably, many women wrestlers find themselves on the sidelines, whether they prefer it or not. To prevent stalemate in the WWE women’s division, their booking needs to be enhanced significantly.
