Charlie Hunnam is an English actor who became famous for his role as Jax Teller in the TV series Sons of Anarchy. Before that, he first gained attention playing the lead role in the film Nicholas Nickleby, which was based on the Charles Dickens novel. He’s also appeared in popular films like Pacific Rim and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.
Before becoming known for more serious roles, Charlie Hunnam appeared in the Judd Apatow comedy series Undeclared in 2001. The show centered around a group of freshmen living in a dorm at a made-up college in Northern California. Hunnam, then 21, played Lloyd, a theater student known for his charm with women.
Undeclared Is a Hilariously Awkward Look at College Life
Judd Apatow was brainstorming ideas for a new TV show. He really wanted to work with the actors and crew from a beloved older show again, so he started thinking about what kind of story would suit them. He quickly landed on the idea of a college setting.
Undeclared follows six college students at the University of Northeastern California as they navigate the challenges of self-discovery and newfound independence. The show centers on Steven Karp, played by Jay Baruchel, a somewhat clumsy and awkward student hoping for a fresh start in college. He lives in a dorm room with his friends Lloyd, Ron (Seth Rogen), and Marshall (Timm Sharp).
The four friends quickly bond while throwing a party and invite the lively Lizzie (Carla Gallo) and the worried Rachel (Monica Keena). The half-hour comedy feels a lot like the show Freaks & Geeks, with similar themes and a funny, awkward style. It’s both hilarious and surprisingly honest and relatable, even when the situations get a bit crazy.
Fox canceled the show Undeclared after just eighteen episodes, continuing its habit of prematurely ending promising series before they can gain a following. Similar to other shows, Fox didn’t help Undeclared succeed. They broadcast episodes randomly, making the storyline hard to follow, and interfered with the show’s structure and actors.
Judd Apatow likened working in network television to a high-pressure situation, saying it felt like having to be creative under extreme constraints. The show’s first episode aired just two weeks after the September 11th attacks, a time Apatow later described as making the show feel insignificant. Speaking at the 2011 Paley Festival, he admitted they felt ashamed to be releasing a comedy at such a sensitive time. Since then, the show has developed a dedicated fan base, particularly after IFC began airing it in 2010.
Charlie Hunnam Doesn’t Always Enjoy Doing Comedy Roles
Lloyd Haythe, from the show Undeclared, was a charming and popular guy who dated a lot of women. As a theater student, he was also more understanding and perceptive than some of the other male characters.
The first episode starts with Steven’s dad, Hal, unexpectedly showing up at a party Steven is having and announcing that he and Steven’s mom are getting divorced. Hal then starts drinking with Ron, and Lloyd eventually joins them. As Hal vents about his wife feeling emotionally empty, Lloyd surprisingly offers some thoughtful and mature advice about his marriage, showing a deeper side than people usually expect.
In one episode, the main character tries to build a real relationship with a woman, but her unpredictable and subtly hostile behavior quickly ends it. Although Charlie Hunnam did a good job, his character didn’t have a major role. Lloyd frequently acted as a friend and advisor to the lead, often offering him dating tips.
Steven was under the impression that after spending the night with Lizzie, they were officially a couple. However, Lloyd quickly corrected him, pointing out that “sleeping with someone isn’t the same as being in a relationship.” Lloyd urged Steven to ask Lizzie on a proper date soon, before she forgot about their encounter.
Occasionally, the show gave Lloyd opportunities to develop as a character, as seen in the episode with Kevin Hart. In that storyline, Lloyd enrolled in a philosophy class and struggled with questions about the meaning of life. He felt life was pointless until he was moved by the sound of a violinist, which reminded him of the value of art and creativity.
Although Charlie Hunnam can perform well alongside established comedic actors, he doesn’t particularly like doing comedy himself. He explained in an interview that comedy requires a unique talent he doesn’t feel drawn to, especially after working with incredibly funny people like Seth Rogen. He says you really need to bring your A-game – and some good jokes – when you’re working with professionals like that.
Charlie Hunnam’s lack of interest in comedic roles likely explains why he played Aldus Snow in Jason Segel’s film, Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
Undeclared Had Several Notable Guest Stars Before They Were Famous
The first episode of Undeclared features some recognizable actors. Simon Helberg, known from The Big Bang Theory, appears early on as Steven’s friend, listening to Jay Burachel, a nineteen-year-old, excitedly discuss his plans to reinvent himself in college.
Jenna Fisher, known for her role in The Office, makes a cameo as a sorority sister who doesn’t want to go to a freshman floor party, explaining that she’s a senior. She appears again later in the series, in episode five, “Sick in the Head,” as one of Lloyd’s dates.
I’m so excited that Tom Welling from Smallville is coming to the party – it’s appropriately named ‘Tom,’ which is funny! Steven was thrilled to invite him, but Ron had to remind Steven that the party wasn’t meant for, well, handsome guys. It’s cool that Lizzie Caplan and Alex Breckenridge are making cameos in ‘Prototype’ too!
Honestly, as the series goes on, you start spotting future stars popping up everywhere! Amy Poehler is fantastic as Hilary, the head RA – she’s playfully hitting on Lloyd and even has a thing with Steven’s dad for a bit. And get this – before Kevin Hart was a household name, he played Luke, this really earnest, religious student. There’s this hilarious episode, “God Visits,” where he’s determined to get Steven on the path to faith. It’s wild seeing these actors before they were famous!
Felicia Day shows up briefly as Sheila, a new roommate for Lizzie and Rachel, and the episode hints at a past relationship with Lloyd. Adam Sandler plays a guest version of himself in “The Assistant.” Will Ferrell appears as Dave, who sells exams and papers to students. Ben Stiller makes a final appearance as an old boyfriend of Eric’s (Jason Segel) mother.
Charlie Hunnam Had Other Incredibly Diverse Early Roles
Following his role in Undeclared, Charlie Hunnam starred as the main character in Nicholas Nickleby. He portrays a kind and principled young man who must support his sister and friends after their father passes away. Unfortunately, when they seek help from his uncle, he intends to split them up and use them for personal gain.
He resents Nicholas’s natural goodness and kindness, especially because he’s become angry and cynical. The movie also featured Jaime Bell, Romola Garai, and Christopher Plummer, who played Nicholas’s cruel Uncle Ralph. This role was a big change for Hunnam after his part in Nicholas Nickelby. It also starred Nicole Kidman and Renee Zellweger. Jude Law played a wounded Confederate soldier determined to return home to his beloved Ada.
Ada has returned to her family’s farm and is working with a newcomer to try and save it. Meanwhile, Hunnam portrays a ruthless gang member during the American Civil War who tracks down and murders soldiers who have deserted. In one disturbing scene, the gang arrives at a farm close to Ada’s, and Hunnam’s character dismounts in a dramatic fashion to participate in the brutal torture and killing of the couple who live there.
Charlie Hunnam appeared alongside Elijah Wood in Green Street Hooligans, portraying a fierce football hooligan who introduces Wood’s character to a world of violence and conflict. A few years after that, he took on the role of a member of the Fishes, a group fighting for the rights of immigrants in the bleak, futuristic world of Children of Men, where humanity struggles with sterility and faces extinction. These intense, often violent roles likely helped prepare him for his breakout role as Jax on the FX series Sons of Anarchy.
